When second-tier singles like Dream's "He Loves U Not" follow-up, "This Is Me," Puff Daddy's silly comeback as P Diddy on "Bad Boy for Life" (let me reiterate -- no real bad boy could possibly be called something as sissy as P Diddy, even if that's what Biggie allegedly called him), Willa Ford's teen-slut anthem "I Wanna Be Bad" (the fact that her album doesn't have a parental advisory points out the inherent flaw in parental advisory stickering), Craig David's Brit-hit "Fill Me In," and Toya's "I Do!!" (not really a hit, but really good all the same) are added into the equation, this winds up as a great snapshot of the state of pop in 2001. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | Like the popular NOW series, TOTALLY HITS 2001 is a singles-laden bonanza crammed with pop from different corners of the music world. Rap gets fully represented and ranges from the funk-fueled eccentricities of Outkast ("So Fresh, So Clean") and rough-neck rhymes of Ludacris ("What's Your Fantasy" featuring Shawna) to the eclectic rhymes of Missy Elliott ("Get Ur Freak On") and the bling-bling of P.Diddy ("Bad Boy For Life" with Black Rob & Mark Curry). Among the faces of contemporary R&B making a cameo are the gifted prodigy Alicia Keys ("Fallin'" remix with Busta Rhymes), pretty boy Usher ("U Remind Me"), and newly minted garage god Craig David ("Fill Me In"). | | Rock-pop contributions include Dido's ethereal smash ("Thank You"), Uncle Kracker's wistful feel-good hit ("Follow Me"), and Eve 6's slice of alt-pop ("Here's to the Night"). There's even a whiff of bubble-gum boy band O-Town ("All Or Nothing") and Dream, Puffy's attempt at an all-girl outfit ("This Is Me" remix featuring Kain). TOTALLY HITS 2001 ends up doing an admirable job serving as an auditory time capsule reflecting the charts at a time when music was a necessary distraction from acts of terror. |
