| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Totally Hits collects an array of totally contemporary chart-toppers from artists like TLC, Monica, Sugar Ray, and 'N Sync. Tracks from Madonna, Barenaked Ladies, Third Eye Blind, Whitney Houston, Brandy, and Faith Hill complete this concise look at pop hits of the late '90s. ~ Heather Phares | | Actually, you could call this Arista's Greatest Hits. There's a certain stylistic variety here, as seen in Faith Hill's late-'90s country rock grandeur, Barenaked Ladies' goofy nice-guy pop-rapping, Santana's skillfully updated Latin rock. However, most of the tracks on TOTALLY HITS are either hip-hop workouts (rock-rapper Kid Rock), r&b ballads (Monica, TLC, 'N Sync), or unabashed dance numbers (Cher's monster hit "Believe" and Madonna's foray into electronica, "Ray of Light"). Pleasant if puzzling surprise: an unusually large number of these songs begin with gentle acoustic guitars (some sampled, some not), including pop party band Sugar Ray's "Someday," which is gentle enough to recall Chad and Jeremy! |

| | Professional Reviews | | Entertainment Weekly (2/11/00, pp.70-1) - "...generally lives up to its title....In terms of bang-for-buck TOTALLY HITS scores handily; listening to it is like discovering a well-rounded Top 40 station but without the ads or loudmouthed jocks..." - Rating: B |
