Very difficult to set up. I had to call a friend,an engineer, for help.He spent 5 hours trying to connect it. Now the TV doesn't show all channels. A technician from the cable company who is scheduled to come and charge for his service.
Instructions should be written in a simple way.

I bought this product basically to convert my HD camera stuff to dvd. I recently bought canonhg10 which uses a strange atleast as of now not so popular format i.e avchd format so rather then spending hours on rendering the video on my pc/laptop I decided to convert the stuff using a nice HD recorder and this dr550 does the stuff well. Used the handy cam in high quality and Recorded the dvd in high quality mode and finalised the dvd the result is EXCELLENT.
Played the DVD on my oridnary portable coby dvd player the picture quality is absolutely great, credit may be shared by canon hg10.
Using the hdmi and component cables may improve the quality but there is no hdmi input for the recorder as per my knowledge. Only HDMI output to TV.
cons as usual are not so great Digital tuner but when tuned gives excellent picture. during the recording dvd noise was more then what I heard earlier from my previous recorders. normal DVD operations are ok not so noisy but recording was noisy. Remote seems to be designed by a junior engineer, might be derived from pilot/pet remote project.
One comment on buy.com is the tax/shipping information can be provided in the early stages , I did not understand the logic of hiding it until the final stages of purchase, I was not happy with the way the final price was given to me. bye. Was this review helpful?

Warranty is 1 yr parts and 90 days labor. After 120 days unit occasionally "forgets" TV record program. Must return to Toshiba and pay an additional $70 since it's out of labor warranty. Follow up, In October I bit the bullet and sent the unit in with $70 for repair. In a week it was back and seemed fine. 8 Weeks later the problem re-surfaced. I called Toshiba and ws told to send it back for a no cost repair. I sent it back and 4 days later they called to say a part was on back order so they would send me a brand new unit. 4 days later (today) the unit arrived at my door. It is indeed a brand new unit as the box contained a new book, remote control, batteries and cables.

This DVD recorder seemed to work just fine and the setup was easy, but it does not hold any user settings after 2-3 days, everything but the date and time reverts back to factory default and all channel programming disappears. I made the mistake of sending it to Toshiba for repair instead of returning it to Buy.com. Toshiba "repaired" it by reflashing the firmware and sending it right back to me the same day they got it. Two days after setting it back up, it did the same thing, went back to factory defult on all settings and channels. I called Toshiba for a new one since it is only about a month old and repaired once already, and they refused, they are making me send it back in for repair again. This time, they are sending a call tag so that I do not have to pay to return it again. I have been waiting a week for the call tag and it is still not here. I will not buy a Toshiba product ever again!!! Was this review helpful?
