Maverick (Tom Cruise) is a reckless F-14 pilot who flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules. While attending the Navy's elite air combat training academy, affectionately known as "Top Gun," Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor (Kelly McGillis) and competes with crackerjack pilot Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honors. He is the quintessential rebel, upsetting senior officers with his antics and risk-taking while simultaneously amazing them with his skill. In the end, Maverick overcomes a tragic loss and his need to stand out in the crowd and proves that he can shine as part of a team. Anthony Edwards stars as Maverick's best friend and co-pilot, Goose, and Meg Ryan first garnered attention as Goose's wife, Carole. Superb state-of-the-art aerial photography makes TOP GUN, directed by Tony Scott, one of the most exciting and entertaining films of its genre. This top grossing movie of 1986 is allegedly based on a Navy fighter pilot program at the Miramar Naval Base in San Diego, California, and was filmed on location at the base.
Plot Summary
Cocky, undisciplined Maverick (Tom Cruise) flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules at the Navy fighter pilot academy with his best friend and co-pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards). Along the way, Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor (Kelly McGillis) who is initially put off by his hotshot antics. When a personal tragedy leads Maverick to reassess his abilities and choices, he proves that he can be a team player and still shine. Directed by Tony Scott, TOP GUN was the top grossing movie of 1986.

This one has it all: action, drama, romance, suspense. The 5.1 sound is incredible, just wait til the afterburners light up in the openning scene. Great sound, great picture, a must for any video library. Was this review helpful?

Tom Cruise fans everywhere should have this movie their collection. Never has a movie touched my adrenial gland like this before. The only thing wrong with the movie was it's incorrect use of some of the aircraft. As a huge airplane fan I found many flaws with this movie that most of the public would not catch. This is so minor that it was really insignificant. I have to say that after I saw this movie I wentout and began my quest to be a Navy Pilot. Didn't become one but how many movies move us to the point of wanting to join the military? GREAT MOVIE! Was this review helpful?

As a pilot I can say that this movie touches the heart of flying and the bond that is built between pilots. The flight filming is fantastic and makes the heart pound. I saw it 5 times when it was at the theater and own two copies of it.

To say Top Gun was just a great movie is an understatement. It was full of energy and charisma that a movie should be full of. I don't think they could have made a movie any better than this back then! It is still ranks as one of the best amoung the rest! Was this review helpful?
