Editor's Note

In TOMORROW NEVER DIES, British super-spy James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) goes after a ruthless media baron, Elliot Carver--an amalgam of Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, and Bill Gates--played with feisty aplomb by Jonathan Pryce. Carver's diabolical plan is to instigate World War III so that his empire can obtain exclusive coverage (a la CNN during the Gulf War). This time, 007 must endure the sorrow of love lost as he shares a nostalgic interlude with his ex-lover Paris (Teri Hatcher) who is now married to his nemesis, Carver. He also discovers a worthwhile partner in a female Chinese counterpart, Wai Lin (Hong Kong action diva Michelle Yeoh). Noteworthy for its unabashed commercial product placement, TOMORROW NEVER DIES follows the sharp direction of Roger Spottiswoode.

ReelViews 8 of 10
The scrutiny surrounding Tomorrow Never Dies, the eighteenth "official" James Bond film (not counting Casino Royale or Never Say Never Again), isn't as intense as it was around Goldeneye, but the attendant hype is, if anything, even more severe. Product tie-ins are everywhere...Now, with Tomorrow Never Dies, it's back to business as usual -- continuing the once-again healthy franchise...Bond fans will likely love this movie. Detractors will yawn it away as "more of the same." In a way, however, that's the point. No one really wants Bond to change or evolve, at least not significantly. We attend movies like Tomorrow Never Dies because they offer a predictably entertaining time with a popular superhero who can save the world with one hand while holding his vodka martini (shaken, not stirred) in the other. Tomorrow Never Dies isn't fundamentally much different from Goldeneye or Goldfinger, for that matter. It's the same basic formula put to effective use. What separates a good Bond movie from a bad one isn't the plot -- it's the supporting cast, the intangibles, and the energy level. With only a few exceptions, Tomorrow Never Dies scores high marks in all three categories. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
James Bond has battled evil commies and megalomaniac madmen; perhaps it was only a matter of time until he faced off against a media baron -- the only sort of figure in today's world that actually does seek global domination. His enemy in "Tomorrow Never Dies'' wants to start a war in order to create headlines for the launch of his latest news channel. Just imagine what Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner would like to do to each other and imagine either one of them doing it to the Chinese, and you'll get the idea...Bond, played confidently and with a minimum of fuss by Pierce Brosnan, stumbles into the middle of the plot, masterminded by Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce), who owns newspapers, TV stations and a gigantic Stealth warship that's invisible to radar. Carver's plan is ingenious: He'll use his satellites to draw a British warship off course, sink it with the Stealth ship, steal its nuclear warheads, and fire one at China, which will think it is under attack from the West. The only flaw in this plan, as far as I can see, is the likely nuclear destruction of most of Carver's biggest markets...On the basis of this installment, the longest-running movies series seems fit for the 21st century. - Roger Ebert
