Fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth on Lost Highway's all-star tribute to Hank Williams, Timeless. Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, and Keith Richards are among the seasoned performers who offer their heartfelt interpretations of Williams' songs, as well as inspired choices from younger artists, including Beck, Ryan Adams, and the grandson of the man being celebrated, Hank III. The songs themselves range from Sheryl Crow's faithful re-recording of "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" to Beck's stripped-down and quirky collaboration with producer Jon Brion on "Your Cheatin' Heart." While the more traditional country songs are entertaining and well-done, the real strong points are the looser, more raw contributions. Keith Richards' boozy rip through "You Win Again" is as intimate and stumbling as ole Hank on his last nights, and hard-livin' torchbearer Ryan Adams' living-room recording of "Lovesick Blues" resonates with the singer's own youthful weariness. The album ends with Lucinda Williams' (no relation) sparse and chilling "Cold, Cold Heart" and Johnny Cash's tender recitation of "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night." While many tribute collections seem disjointed and disappointing, Timeless pulls together some of the most interesting artists available, and their performances, while varied, all display a passionate devotion to the music of one of country's true legends. ~ Zac Johnson | | The first question that comes to mind upon the release of a Hank Williams tribute album featuring such alt-country superstars as Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams, not to mention American icons like Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, is "what took so long?" Clearly, the artists featured on the TIMELESS tribute have all been strongly influenced by the great bard of country music, so their participation in such a project seems like a given. Some artists stick closer to Hank's original arrangements than others; Sheryl Crow's take on "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" and Hank's grandson Hank III's "I'm A Long Gone Daddy" hew pretty closely to the traditional path. Predictably, Beck takes things the furthest by adding some sonic murk to "Your Cheatin' Heart." Keith Richards reaches deep into "You Win Again" and pulls out some Memphis soul. But regardless of their faithfulness to the original versions, these artists clearly have something to add to the Hank Williams legacy, underling the fact that the man's songs are truly TIMELESS. | Engineer: Ethan Johns; John Carter Cash; John Whynot; Keb' Mo'; Mickey Petralia; Rafael Serrano; Tom Petty; Ben Elliot; Bob Brockman |

4 of 5 Great overall with many gems Wednesday, November 07, 2001 Kevin P. from Indianapolis, IN
Tough to find better songwriting. Of course, these are Hank Williams songs. Lyrically, they stand on their own in modern times. Musically, they're pretty, lonesome and lingering, with honest interpretations by all artists. For a "cover" album, it's good. It has many gems. "You Win Again" performed by Keith Richards is probably my favorite. I think I'll be playing this album quite a lot. Good and even production from front to back and it has a nice warm sound, mostly acoustic but with a touch of electric here and there. Fun stuff. Was this review helpful?
