Wells' landmark novel comes this beloved adventure about the inventor of a time-travel device that whisks him through a war-ravaged 20th century and into a far-off era where humans are enslaved by evil subterranean mutans. Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux and Alan Young star in this Best Special Effects Oscar winner.
 Editor's Note
Setting the temporal starting point of the classic H.G. Wells novel in the year 1960 (rather than 1900), this engrossing adaptation follows the Time Traveler as he passes through World Wars I, II, and III and finally stops in the year 802,701. There he finds an apathetic, placid people called the Eloi and falls in love with one of their number, the beauteous blonde Weena. To his horror, however, he learns that the Eloi's apathy is generated by a maniacal, cannibalistic underworld--and that the only way to help them is to incite a revolution. George Pal's version of THE TIME MACHINE is an exciting and faithful cinematic production of H.G. Wells's 1895 classic. Academy Awards: Best Special Effects.

 | The Time Machine (1960) - DVD Review By: Christopher Null - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 8/21/2009 2:42 PM | |
Probably edgy and thrilling in its day, The Time Machine hasn't aged so well. The menacing Morlocks are just fat guys in blue paint, and Wells turned out to be not-so-right predicting a nuclear holocaust in 1966. Oh well. An interesting side note: Fragments of virtually every episode of the original Star Trek can be found within this film....read the full review |

5 of 5 A four dimensional sci-fi classic Wednesday, June 04, 2003 A Viewer from Long Island, NY
I saw this movie when I was a kid and it stood with me ever since. Great story, great effects (for it's days) and great cast. This movie will most likely grab your imagination and will take you for a ride in the fourth dimension like no other film as ever done. Overall: EXCELLENT. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 An HG Wells Classic Saturday, September 07, 2002 Roger from Petaluma, CA
Best movie production of the book I've ever seen. The storyline follows very closely with the original HG Wells book that I read in high school mid 50's. The special effects coupled with strong performances by Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux and Sebastion Cabet really bring to life the book quite accurately before your very eyes. Very well done! Some fairly graphic scenes near the end may motivate parents to preview before showing young children under eightish age. No swearing and other than before mentioned, a G Rated flick. Enjoy! 5 of 5 HG Wells Time Machine -- The Original Movie Saturday, August 31, 2002 RLO from Petaluma, CA
Excellent movie with very good performances by Rod Taylor, the inventor and Yvette as Weena in the future. Special effects, given the 50's era technology were pretty good. This is the only movie that I have ever seen supposedly based on the HG Wells classic that actually follows the storyline of his book reasonably close.
I read the book as a teeager prior to seeing the movie on the silver screen in the latter 50's and enjoy it yet today. Highly recommend it to all. Was this review helpful?
