Yukmouth spends most of his time on Thug Lord dissing other rappers rather than focusing on what he has to say. Tracks like "Regime Killers 2001" and "Oh Boy!" take aim at all the usual suspects: fake rappers and music execs who keep true rappers like himself down. There are a few highlights, however. "World's Most Wanted" cleverly interpolates the theme song from the soap opera The Young and the Restless and "Puffin Lah" is a steel drum-filled ode to marijuana use. Despite the occasional bright spot, Thug Lord shows just how far Yukmouth has fallen since his days with Luniz. ~ Jon Azpiri | | Yukmouth spends most of his time on Thug Lord, his second solo album, dissing other rappers. A rapid-fire delivery over skittering beats signals the arrival of the latest Luniz member to drop his solo effort. THUG LORD is an uncompromising slice of West Coast thug life. | | A musically sophisticated backdrop doesn't mask the hardness of the lyrics, even when Li'l Mo's honeyed vocals put forth the case for thug womanhood. Yukmouth is under no illusions about life's realities--it's all about the money in his world, especially if it's thug money. A piano trill heralds "So Ignorant," featuring Kurupt, where Yukmouth confronts a few of his demons to the tune of Rockwell's '80s hit "Somebody's Watching Me," proving he's not above a little healthy introspection. Though he's probably no threat to most of the rappers currently populating the upper reaches of the charts, Yukmouth's raps still wield a hefty punch. |
