Virgin recording group A Perfect Circle has concluded a half-year creative process of emotional soul-searching with the completion of their much-anticipated second album, Thirteenth Step. A dramatically powerful album that picks up sonically where Mer De Noms left off, Thirteenth Step is a conceptual exploration of the darker side of the human psyche. The final sequence of songs includes: "The Package," "Weak and Powerless," "The Noose," "Blue," "Vanishing," "A Stranger," "The Outsider," "Crimes," "The Nurse Who Loved Me," "Pet," "Lullaby," and "Gravity."

"[The] band's winding, off-kilter rhythms and contrapuntal guitar riffs create an ominous atmosphere."  Entertainment Weekly
"Once again, A Perfect Circle have quietly produced a masterpiece that challenges the very nature of testosterone-fueled angst."  Alternative Press

Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
A Perfect Circle: Maynard James Keenan (vocals, gourd); Billy Howerdel (guitar, piano, bass, programming, background vocals); Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar); Jeordie White (bass); Josh Freese (drums, percussion).
With its sophomore effort, THIRTEENTH STEP, A Perfect Circle permanently sheds any clinging notions of being a Tool side-project. Although Maynard James Keenan's plaintive vocals immediately conjure up thoughts of his other outfit, APC distinguishes itself by furthering the melodic elements present on the group's first outing, MER DE NOMS. "The Package" starts things off slowly, with a foreboding guitar line and minimal drum cadence that gradually build into a full-blown Sabbath-like dirge. Carried along by the fluid bass playing of Jeordie White (formerly known as Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson), "The Noose" gives a tip of the hat to the Cure's gloomiest work, while White and guitarist Billy Howerdel create an entrancingly chiming bass/guitar tapestry on "Blue."
Though many of the album's tracks surge with APC's powerful metal riffs, the folky "A Stranger" and the lush "The Nurse Who Loved Me" both feature Keenan's voice supported by a gorgeous bed of strings and little else. A cycle that touches on themes of corruption, despair, and redemption, THIRTEENTH STEP is brought to a fitting conclusion by "Gravity," a powerful song that captures both the dark and light aspects of this fascinating band.

Producer: Billy Howerdel

Engineer: Billy Howerdel

The world of hard rock has consolidated into one unvarying wall of catchy hooks and rage, so whenever a group stretches beyond the obvious into a land of varying time signatures and unconventional song structures, the relief is obvious and immediate and so is the temptation to call the results "progressive." However, it's not that weird. A Perfect Circle is the work of Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan and Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, with a rotating cast of misfits (now to include ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha and Jeordie White, known to the world as Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson). By muting Tool's over-the-top attack, Keenan has more time to devote to deepening the textures throughout. APC's second album, Thirteenth Step, has its share of anthemic moments, but the real passion spills over in the moody overtures where menacing danger feels seconds away. "The Noose" and aptly titled "Blue" particularly heighten the tension. Think of it this way, even headbangers need to relax their necks from time to time. - Rob O'Connor

4 of 5 If You Love A Perfect Circle, You'll Love This Alb Thursday, September 16, 2004
Chris from Callicoon

"Thirteenth Step" delivers an ambient mix of hard rock and catchy riffs. The lyrics are kind of hard to understand at first, but you will soon catch on and totally enjoy this album. My advice: Go out right now ( or as soon as possible ) and buy this album.

4 of 5 Great CD Wednesday, August 11, 2004

3 of 5 Well, perhaps I stand alone Thursday, October 30, 2003
A Listener from Wilmington, North Carolina
My first instinct was to be critical. In general, a good album. Took a few times listening to it to really get in to it, unlike my reactions to the first one and the other unmentionable albums by the unmentionable lead singer. Perhaps just a personal thing though. The music strums a deep chord and leaves the listening listener pondering "what else are these musicians doing in there?" Definitively a good investment.

A Listener from colorado
When I listened to TS for the firsttime my stomach dropped and I tought, could this possibly be a bad album? I thought it sounded shallw minimal rushed and over produced. Then I gave it a second listen and a tird and by the tenth time around it wasbeautiful. I realized just as I did with MDN that APC's music needs to grow and mature, plus I think hearing the live stuff inn advance may have spoiled it a little. overall TS is a more complete album. But the two are to different to really compare.

4 of 5 mm yummy Thursday, October 16, 2003
A Listener from wallingford, ct
strange and beautiful. the lyrics have an amazingly subtle way of being incredibly deep and moving when appropriate and somewhat confusing and light at other times. Softer emotional tracks, mixed with harder angrier tracks. Maynard’s voice is haunting – taking on both masculine and feminine qualities. great use of rhythm, mood, guitar. a perfect balance. nice to hear a softer bass unlike Tool which by the way is totally different music from APC unlike some critics claim. (who hires these music magazine critics?)Tool is harder, sharper, left brain, more masculine... APC is softer, rounder, right brain, more feminine and earthy (the drumming in the package like a heartbeat). If you’re looking for an album to bring itself to you, straightforward and apparent - wrong album. If you’re looking for something deeper, something artistic and available to your own interpretation of not only lyrics and music but also sound - you’ve got it. This band is not looking to reduce itself to please anyone. If you don’t agree you may have been too straight while listening. I do agree that it seems as though the album is missing an element, however it far exceeds almost every release this year and it seems more as though this is part one to a two-part compilation. Eager to see what’s next.

5 of 5 I am amazed Tuesday, October 07, 2003
slava from Torun, Poland
It is very difficult to express by words what I feel when I am listening to this album. I could say it is beautiful, amazing, marvelous, moving, poetic etc. but these are only words. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I am not going to favour any single song - maybe I am wrong but I regard "Thirteenth Step" as a kind of concept album. And this concept is very meaningful for me. The final words are: "I choose to live" and for me it is an inspiration to live through another day. Do not hesitate to buy this album - it will be one of the most beatiful experiences in your life. Thank you APC for keeping music alive.

5 of 5 Album of the Year serves no justice..... Wednesday, October 01, 2003
Aaron Spicer from Cuyahoga Falls, OH
Yes ladies and gentlemen, this album is a symphonic masterpiece. The long wait since the debut album pays off big dividends and leaves you pressing the replay button over and over. It took several listens to really get the feel for the album, but I can tell you that the new fresh bass sound and masterful guitar work is just outstanding! And did I mention Maynard sure knows how to pen a tune. The album starts off with a nice crunky sound with "The Package" which starts off slow and mellow tempoed but picks up the pace at the end. Tunes like "The Noose" and "Pet" let you know that this album is gonna have a few hits and APC won't be falling off the face of the earth anytime soon. A must buy "Album of the year" is my evaluation!

i bought A Perfect Circle's album, "Thirteenth Step", the day it was released! most of my friends have since picked it up as well. i absolutely love the whole album, and it's hard to pick a favorite song. but so far my favorites are "Weak And Powerless", "The Noose", "Pet", and "The Nurse Who Loved Me". i think the entire album is so awesome! i was waiting for "Thirteenth Step" to be released, and i'm glad i finally have it! i've been telling everyone that i can about A Perfect Circle's album, "Thirteenth Step". and i will continue to tell people about A Perfect Circle and their album, "Thirteenth Step". i even promoted to the cashier, who asked me about my A Perfect Circle sticker that i was wearing, and said they had been selling their CD's all day, who were they? so, i gladly told her about A Perfect Circle and gave her some stickers! A Perfect Circle rocks! everytime i listen to "Thirteenth Step", i love it even more! i highly recommend A Perfect Circle's album, "Thirteenth Step" to everyone who does not have it yet! do not miss out on an awesome album!

4 of 5 A Step Down From Mer de Noms Tuesday, September 30, 2003
A Listener from Seymour IN
Thirteenth Step is one of those rare sophomore albums that manages to step away from a band’s debut and take hold on a new sound. With their second album, APC has taken a step away from its melodic core with the departure of two original members. However, in the process of gaining two new influences, the band has lost much of its musical soul. Paz Lenchantin’s departure has robbed the band of its delicate, vulnerable femininity. Songs like “3 Libras,” “Breña,” and “Orestes” from Mer de Noms have been left behind for the new, heavy sound of “Pet,” “Weak and Powerless,” and “The Outsider.” The only fragments of the original soul can be found in the haunting ballad “Noose” and the album ender “Gravity.” “Noose” is a masterpiece of the new line up, expanding on the sound of Mer de Noms and gently adding the heaviness of Thirteenth Step. “Gravity” is a leftover from the old line-up; beautfiul but unfortunately sounding like a throw-away track left off Mer de Noms. With the line-up change, APC has become entirely male, causing the band to become beefy and heavy. Paz has been replaced by the loud dull bassist from Marilyn Manson, Jeordie “Twiggy Ramirez” White. Her violins have been pre-empted for synthesizers and generic guitar. This is a huge leap toward the masculinity of Mer de Noms’ first single, “Judith,” a generic formulaic pothole in the flow of Mer de Noms. Songs with the potential to be peaceful art rock masterpieces are weighted down by droning guitars and heavy bass that are more painful than pleasurable. In “Pet,” even singer Maynard James Keenan, of Tool fame, has changed left behind his beautiful crooning and leaned toward ravaging Tool styling. This leaves much to be desired from the songs on this new album. Though obviously musically lacking, even the lyrics of this new CD have taken a step down. Once haunting, the lyrics have become more obscure than though-provoking. Deep lyrics should inspire thought, but lyrics like “someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China, white as Dracula as I approach the bottom” from “Weak and Powerless” are more silly than entertaining. In addition, the album is reminiscent of Mer de Noms in that it has a sudden change with an out-of-place track. In place of Judith, this album has “The Nurse Who Loved Me,” a cover of a Failure track. This song has some of the most laughable metaphors even included in a song. Instead of being drawn into the echoes of Maynards vocals, a listener is going to fall backwards giggling at the line “Say hello to the apples on the ground. They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping.” Though it clocks in at 50 minutes, this album feels exceptionally short due to the disappointing lack of ballads. APC is heading in the wrong direction. Instead of moving toward an enhancement of the ambience of Mer de Noms, APC is taking a strong step toward a mainstream bastardized version of Tool.

5 of 5 Different, yes. Still amazing, for sure. Tuesday, September 30, 2003
perfectool65 from Michigan
APC does it again, intricate lyrics, Maynards haunting voice, incredible instrumental artistry from all involved, and while Paz will be sorely missed, the new members have more than taken up the torch. Unparalleled production quality, APC will reach into everyones soul, take hold of it, and put it right in your face for you to study in depth. If you don't have their first release, buy it. If you do, buy a second copy just to let this band know we need more. If your local DJ's don't have the nuts to play this on their own, request the hell out of it, tell them we need intelligent music, not more of the current boy bands thinly disguised as punk, rock, and/or alternative.

it's a different direction for A Perfect Circle but the new members of the band are a good addition to its sound. Definitely worth checking out. Lyrically haunting and disturbingly beautiful, the new album is like waking up from a bizarre dream you only half remember.

5 of 5 AWESOME STUFF! Monday, September 29, 2003
A Listener from Los Angeles, CA
This is one of the most amazing records I have ever heard. Anyone who says that they sound just like Tool needs to open their ears, mind and expand their horizons. You can hear how the songwriting and producing goes the next step when looking back to the debut release "Mer de Noms". The vocal stylings of Maynard are so intense and catchy. I don't know the words yet to the songs, however I find myself whistling the melodies. It's too much. I am curious to hear how this stuff sounds live. If there is any doubt to buy this record, forget about it. If you listen to it once and it doesn't click, take a break and try again later. Pet, The Nurse, and Blue are some awesome tracks, but then again, the entire CD is awesome so just listen to it and enjoy the journey.

I bought the album the day it came out and I've got to say,APC You rock!!! Sweet, mellow, jagged and angry all intertwined to create an album that is highly addictive tugging at your emotional strings and pounding your soul with every drumbeat! Maynards voice tears through the listener like a sharp knife at times then caresses you and licks your wounds. A truly inpiring album that I am proud to own!

5 of 5 Buy This Now! Saturday, September 27, 2003
Sicilia from HOU< TX
This album is so captivating. You really can't go wrong with these five musicians. For those of you who aren't familiar, It is Billy Howerdell, Maynard James Keenan(of Tool), Josh Freese (drummer for various bands), Jordie (Twiggy of Marylin Manson), and James Iha (of the Smashing Pumpkins). With this combination, you are bound to have an incredible result, and that it is. Maynard never ceases to send chills down my spine with those vocals. He is also a great lyricist. Billy Howerdell is a very talented composer. And the other three, do I even need to go on?? Just go and buy this album. DONT STEAL MUSIC OFF OF THE INTERNET EITHER!!! THEIVES! Go BUY this album.

in the final step you fall into a different state of mind. i have now listened to this album for the sixteenth time and i still don't want anything else. the whole point of the a perfect circle is that they are, only two albums and i hate the fact that i will have to wait for a couple more years to hear a third. but i guess that's how long it takes to make it perfect. i love this album. i think that you will too.

5 of 5 Grade A Music Wednesday, September 24, 2003
ayashi85 from Arizona
I recently saw A Perfect Circle in concert at Lollapalooza, and they ROCKED! This band has TALENT, a.k.a they don't suck live, unlike a good portion of singers today. A Perfect Circle's last CD was so good, but their new release definetly lived up to the last one. Each song has a different feel to it, and the sound is intense and emotional. Not to mention the singing... Maynard's voice is electric. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates real (Warning: not for those who are fans of crap music like Hilary Duff.)

5 of 5 A Perfect Circle = A Perfect Album Wednesday, September 24, 2003
A Listener from Commerce, MI
Much different than Mer De Noms, but perfect as well in its own way, this album delivers what most bands these days cannot. Maynard James Keenan of Tool is probably the most important edition to the band A Perfect Circle (who's songs date around early 1990's to late 1980's) with his incredible vocal impact. Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step are almost uncomparable, but considering this we could say they've grown musically. If all bands' albums sounded alike, music would be pretty monotonous. I've never heard anything like A Perfect Circle and all of its aspects; vocals, instrumental parts, etc. It helped that Billy Howerdel had a recording studio in his home, giving each band member the chance to record and re-record songs until it reached the perfect level it's now at. I can't really pick a favorite song of mine on the album, because I honestly think they're all equally perfect, but sounding different each time. This is one of the best albums I've bought in a long time. I highly suggest purchasing it. You won't regret it.

5 of 5 Thirteenth Step Tuesday, September 23, 2003
brokein2 from Cleveland, OH
Thirteenth Step is what’s created when true musicians work together to make an album. It is expected to see a level of maturity in every bands following effort. A Perfect Circle more than surpasses a normal expectation. The album is amazing from start to finish. It's completely solid both technically and musically. As the guitarist Billy Howerdel challenges you, I do the same. I challenge you to listen to this entire CD with headphones, enabling you to hear the little details and care that encompass this cd to reach new levels. You will see that every second of this album has been thought out. Every note, every effect, every word has been planned out with most precision. In mathematics a true “prefect circle” is impossible. Thirteenth Step is exactly what the band is called, a “Perfect Circle”. Thirteenth Step, the impossible has been achieved.

Once again, a collection of musicians have come together to create a most awesome audio experience. With each endeavor undertaken by Maynard (and all of the talent he manages to assemble) the music and lyrics take on a life of their own. Just a little something to alter those brain waves.

5 of 5 APC take it to the next level Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Toolmanjpc from Norton, MA
APC has taken a major step forword with their newest cd, Thirteenth Step. While Mer de Noms put them on the map.. this cd takes the intensity and emotion in the previous cd to an even higher level. Its hard to describe each song in words, but when played... i feel this cd is generally mellower, and much better flowing then the previous cd, whith songs having common themes and connecting with each other. Not to mention Maynards lyrics and vocals, which be it with Tool OR APC, challenge your mind, your beliefs, and are pure poetry. The Package-- An excellent opener to the cd.. and the longest song APC has done at 7+ minutes. After a long slow build-up, this song explodes into Heavy riff, immediatly setting the tempo for the album... Weak and Powerless -- The first single.. and a good song, with some interesting lyrics The Noose -- One of my favorites of Thirteenth Step, a rather mellow, but amazing track that reminds me a lot of Tool's The Patient. Brilliant song Blue -- Great vocals from Maynard on another rather mellow, but good track Vanishing -- This track strikes me as kind of an odd darker track, a quiet opening, a sudden pick up, and then a mellow groove. Intriguing and enjoyable track The Stranger -- Sort of the "3 Libras" of the CD if you will, this one has a very mellow, acoustic sound with no drums. Relaxing. The Outsider -- Rocking song, with powerful lyrics... a real wake-up call to those who had been relaxing to the mellow stuff. Crimes -- an interlude with counting.. Nurse who loved me -- the VERY mellow cover of the Failure song by the same name. Imagine Maynard singing a love song.. yea.. Beautiful, but a little freaky! Pet -- My favorite, and a great rocking song with amazing lyrics. brilliant Lullaby -- The live intro song.. interlude Gravity -- A great close out song, harmonic... amazing. All in all, the Album has not left my CD player since i bought it a week ago. Buy, Listen, Let go.. be happy. And go see APC when they tour, as i can tell you they produce one of THE BEST live shows i have seen.

5 of 5 Almost TOO good Tuesday, September 23, 2003
A Listener from Severna Park, MD
I am always in jealous awe of musicians. (Not POP STARS! If you don't know the difference you can stop reading at this point.) As soon as I slid my freshly unwrapped CD into my car to hear at least a song or two on my 5 minute drive home, I knew. From my head to my toes, my spirit latched onto the music and merged with it and EVOLVED. When I reached the "The Noose", I can only say that it is an incredible song. The kind you could melt your eardrums on; isolated by headphones, and the wattage set to post-nuclear shockwave, infused by the song about 50 times in a row. You don't merely listen to the Thirteenth Step. You FEEL it, your soul cavorts with it. Maynard has a wonderful voice, it is smooth, sensual, and has a range most singers would kill for. It always surprises me just HOW good he is, and then I am surprised that I am surprised because I ought to know by now. Buy it. Listen to it. Become with it.

The talent behind this album is amazing and it shows in the end product. This album will take you to places you didn't know existed and open your mind. The emotion is overwhelming is the vocals and the rythum of the music is hypnotic. A Perfect Circle is a refreshing change from all the hiphop today and proves that if you open up and let it go it will be embraced.

5 of 5 Thirteenth Step Tuesday, September 23, 2003
A Listener from Detroit, Mi
'Mer De Noms' captivated me with its unique sound. With their debut, A Perfect Circle brought a true heartfelt melodic fashion back to a soulless music scene. This different look at what music could truly be is what sucked me completely into their music. The sophomore effort has been, for me, one of the most anticipated albums since they set the standard with that 2000 release. 'Thirteenth Step' has delivered everything that I expected from the band and more. The passion that each member has for music is defiantly reflected in the album and the way it was put together. From 'The Package' to 'Gravity' each step taking you in and filling you with its melodic and tranquil romance through the deep base and impeccable lyrics in strategic timing only to leave you yearning for more, forcing you to start the disk again. I can't say a bad thing about any of the songs on this disk, not one. I bought the album over a week ago and I haven't stopped listening to it yet. It hasn't gotten old and is not like a lot of other bands lately where only a few songs are listenable and you have no idea what the rest is. Maynard and Billy deliver once again. Adding Jeordie and James to the lineup has been flawless transition and even a boost to the depth of the band and music. APC proves that there first album wasn't a fluke, they have something raw and unbridled, the progression that developed in their second release is what will surely set them apart from the previous or other bands that each member has been involved with. "Just ignore the smoke and smile" [from Blue, TS]. It's already become an instant classic in my CD collection. I look forward to the many experiences I shall have while listening to this album, as I know there will be many. Thanks Billy, Timmy, Jeordie, James and Josh, can wait to see you live.

Another perfect CD from A Perfect Circle. Thirteenth Step is completely mesmorizing! This phenomenal piece of work has taken me to heaven and back! Incredible arrangements, brilliant guitars and lyrics that pierce your soul! Billys brilliance, Maynards beautiful vocals and Josh's heartfelt pounding of the "wardrums" never cease to amaze me! Although I absolutely love the whole cd, a few of my favorite tracks are "The Outsider", "Blue" , "The Noose" and "Pet". Many heartfelt thanks for sharing your talents with the music world and I definitely look forward to the future.

5 of 5 such a lovely color for you Tuesday, September 23, 2003
smiksmak from san diego, ca
i have waited for a perfect circle's second installment for a long, long time, and believe you me, it was worth the wait. maynard's lyrics, steeped in the pain, apology, regret, and hopefulness of an addict (of so many things). this able made me feel emotions akin to that of "orestes" off of mer de noms. this albums is steeped in whatever life maynard led, and the songs seem to cleanse his soul. you can feel that emotion in every note and every lyric. pay special attention to the bass lines, and buy this, not for a comparison to mer de noms, because they are totally different entities, but for a view of the band that is different, changed by the life lived. standouts include "the observer," "blue," and "the noose."

5 of 5 Amazing! Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Jessica from Cleveland, Ohio
The second effort for APC has turned out to be trully amazing. Every song on this album has a little different of a sound. You will not be disappointed if you're a fan of Tool and looking to see what Maynard's like. If you're a APC virgin... you will be blown away by the intensity of this record. My favorite songs are, "Pet" and "The Noose".

Easily one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Maynard's vocals are so hypnotic that I can't wait to listen to this album over and over again until I memorize every word. I like every song on the album. Every time I listen to it, I don't skip any tracks. Buy this album!!!!!!!

5 of 5 The best album of 2003 Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Frompus from Chicago, IL
Billy, Maynard, James, Jeordie, and Josh- Best of the best 2003, they put on a fantastic performance and released this perfect album. This pristine piece of artwork is worth buying, infact I would follow Maynard's advice and "Buy 6 of them, glue them together and make a box, you can keep sh*t in it!". This album and the artists who made it are god-like. You will enjoy it, trust me.

5 of 5 Thirteen steps to true art Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Jo from Madison heights, VA
After my long anticiapetd wait for "Thirteenth Step" to be released my wait finally came to an end. I rushed right out & got it. It's obvious with theopening of the first song "The Package" that APC has grown & matured. The development of this band is overwhelming. It seems that everything Maynard James Keenan touches turns to gold. He knows how to grasp your mind & your soul & take you on a musical adventure. "Thirteenth Step" is worth every penny you pay for it. There is not one bad song on this disk. Each 7 every song will take you on a journey. If I were forced to choose a favorite song that song would have to be "The Noose". You know as soon as you hear the frist chord that this song is special. Maynard's heart tugging vocals pull every emotional string in your body. Soothing yet haunting vocals that touch you deep within. "Not to pull your halo down" "Around your neck & tug you to the ground" "But I'm more than just a little curious" "How you're planning to go about making your amends" "To the dead" If this song doesn't touch you, move you, send chills up your spine something is wrong. This is truly a beautiful album if you are one to appreciate new things. Go for the art, not for the top 10. I truly believe this is the best album of 2003.

5 of 5 Living is the "THIRTEENTH STEP" Tuesday, September 23, 2003
nednarb eyeymnepo from under a dead ohio sky
Hey everyone! I just wanted to give you an informed review to A Perfect Circle’s new album “THIRTEENTH STEP”. I am someone who learned long ago the lyrical complexity that is Maynard James Keenan. With his “other” project TOOL he pushed me to go new places to feel new things. Driven by music that you don’t just “hear”. You listened to it you felt it. Believe me you’ll feel a “THIRTEENTH STEP”. The music enraptures you, taking you to a new level. Sending you to a place that is thought provoking, and challenging. It could leave the “common” listener saying, “How dare APC make a album like this”. I say to them “What an album that you can’t just push play and bob your head to. Dare they make songs that sound different, and actually try to create something not just mimic something”? The songs contained within this album are beautiful captures of reality and the unknown. Starting out lulling you into a new environment, causing your brain to become open and accepting to an experience. Then leading into their first single “Weak and Powerless”. Yes, this song is radio material. It’s catchy and quick. With a funky beat and rhythm that only hints at what the album really holds for the listener. Again reaction from some "fans" I heard. “This song doesn’t fit, or this song was so made for radio”. Well that’s somewhat true. It is a single. Appears it's easy and more inviting to “Joe shmoe and Sally from the Valley” to reach that bigger radio audience. To perhaps get them do buy something that might help them find out what real music is all about. When APC released their first album “Mer De Noms” they had a good running start, but they still needed that base fan group. So they released “Judith” as a single. The song was probably the heaviest song off the album and connected with the rock crowd. Well that was only a surface look at what “Mer de Noms” was. It turned out that is was a beautiful new sounding music that tugged at your more sensitive emotions. It was an album of passion and moments of love. Simply put when APC came out they wanted to draw in the rock crowd, and have them create the “APC Scene”. Ensuring that the band wouldn’t be taken over by “teeny boppers”. With their second release they took it to the Next Step. They used a single to draw in new fans that was from a different “scene”. So they are just maximizing their exposure without being the typical “MTV LOOK AT ME BAND”. I say it was genius, and a lot more obvious than how the record companies try to lure you in. Next you’re gently laid into a beautiful airy place with the “Noose”. This starts off the 4-song continuation of deep encompassing thought and submission to the music. The music goes in all directions. Using everything from simple guitars to digital beats inserted most likely from the great Danny Lohner. Along with Maynard’s cleanest sounding, and most vivid vocals to date. On the whole album he shows that he isn’t just a voice he is an instrument. Let alone that the lyrics are completely top notch, and as always teaching, questioning and acknowledging what it means to be human. Next you move into some really great get up and move to the rhythm songs. Not by any means mosh like. It’s music your body can’t deny. You move almost involuntarily as the deep bass and shimmering guitars twist and pull. Not a thing is missed in this album. Its vibe will leave you feeling positive and eager to live. For as the album ends with track “Gravity” an awe inspiring experience with the lines “I choose to live, I chose to live….”ending the album. If you want another “Mer de Noms” you aren’t going to get. Understand that album is done. Its here, you’ll always have it. Please listen to it often, but you should both want and need artist to push the envelope. To make something new and different from what you already have. I am thankful APC takes risk. Most bands won’t put themselves on the line to be the group who changed the sounds of music. Most bands today don’t have the talent. So defiantly buy “Thirteenth Step”, and go see them live in the fall and winter. It’s a great new piece to add to your music collection. If you’re like me, don’t try and rank this cd. Don’t compare it to its predecessor. Realize that there is room in life for many great cd’s and records. We should be grateful that out of those thousands of records that are released we have the few select great cds we do. Love and support all great and creative artists. Especially APC for with “THIRTEENTH STEP” they helped us all reach the next level of our own self-understanding. Nednarb’s history Age: 22 Location: Under a dead Ohio sky. In concert TOOL: 15 times since 1996 APC: 10 times since their debut tour with NIN’s.

5 of 5 APC DOES IT AGAIN Monday, September 22, 2003
A Listener from Seattle, Washington
This is one of the best cds I've ever heard. It has all the components of Mer De Noms, except more Maynard. It is very mellow, which is good if certain things are lit....... like incense. We wont go there, but this is a very good cd. If you like Tool, old Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Deftones, String Cheese Incident, Grateful Dead, or plain good music, this cd is right for you. Go out and buy it, today. You won't regret it.

5 of 5 Why can't all bands have this kind of musical inte Monday, September 22, 2003
dreamse83 from Monterey, CA
This album is a beautiful step taken even further in progression from "Mer De Noms". This album picks up where the later leaves, and take us even deeper into the animal that is A Perfect Circle. The songs are deep and emotional. It is easy to lose yourself in this album. My respect and support goes out to the guys in APC. Another job well done! Buy this album, support this band! They deserve it. You will not be dissapointed!

4 of 5 Not Quite the Same Monday, September 22, 2003
Justin from Oklahoma
Unfortunately, I was kind of disappointed with the CD as a whole. When I dropped it in the CD player, I expected it to blare out in a drum intro and warp me in a 6/8 lullaby type melody... And what I got was a Tool song. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Tool; but that's not what APC is supposed to be. There are some great APC-style tracks on this CD (The Noose, A Stranger, Weak and Powerless), then there are a few too-Tool tracks (The Package, The Outsider, Gravity), and some tracks that seem to combine the two (Pet). And there also are some really weird tracks, like The Nurse Who Loved Me and Lullaby (which does its job quite well). But, all-in-all, it just simply doesn't have the flow and magic that the first album had; too many veterans in the band with their own style for them to go experimental.

5 of 5 A Perfect Rating! Monday, September 22, 2003
Gia from Hiw, Michigan
I was so pleased with the follow-up to "Mer De Noms". "Thirteenth Step" left me at the thirteenth level while listening to this. Maynard's voice will forever hold the hunger that it did when he made his first album which most artist's end up losing over time. Billy Howerdel and Josh Freese continue to rock us with their awesome talents. I am already awaiting their third album!!
