5 of 5No mousepad, otherwise Great Value! Monday, September 01, 2008 Nick from Jacksonville, FL
I ordered this laptop because of the price, plain and simple. I paid $399. Where can you get a new laptop with most everything you need for that price. I ordered it so fast, I didn't even notice that it didn't have a mouse pad, but the old eraser head mouse.
Not a problem for me, but some may not like it.
Could use a bit of a memory boost, I put in 2Gb which I got for $35, and I have a great laptop for under $450. ya can't beat it

4 of 5Ethernet and wireless problems. Thursday, May 29, 2008 brophy-at-pobox.com from Byron,MN
This is a fine wide-screen Notebook computer... but driver and software problems cost me many, many hours. I've re-installed the base software twice before finding these notes posted here by other kind people. Briefly, internet access just stops working on a reboot. Something about scanning for wireless connections. Network Connections show that you are connected, but you cannot ping your router, or get any communication to it. 1) If you turn off the wireless device (switch on the left front edge, or use Fn+F5) and reboot, you may get wired LAN access again. 2) THEN uninstall Access Connections, and use ThinkVantage System Update to get software and driver updates. I bought two of these, and it is going to take me 4+ hours to set up the second one, now that I know how.

4 of 5Great Deal but Wireless is a pain Tuesday, May 27, 2008 A Customer from Warrenton, VA
I have used Thinkpads for a long time and this is my third. It is a very good buy but setting up the wireless is a pain. Read the manual about something called "Access Connections" to set it up. This is not a deal breaker, just not expected. Other than that, its a great buy.

4 of 5Good, basic laptop Tuesday, May 27, 2008 A Customer from Philadelphia, PA
I got this laptop for the kids. Not to play games but for homework, general surfing the net, chatting and email. It is good for that. For the price, it is a great deal. Adding an additional 1gb of ram was a snap. It could be a bit peppier but for the intended purpose it is fine. We also use Openoffice on it to help keep added software costs down.

4 of 5Good buy, but ... Sunday, May 25, 2008 Jim from Jefferson City, MO
Was surprised to be charged for shipping after the teaser said otherwise. Good value nonetheless for the amount paid. Clicked on refresh while I was buying and the price changed. Did have some issues getting wireless working (Access Connections is a pain!) Otherwise, a pretty good deal overall.

5 of 5Excellent Bargain- Great Seller Sunday, May 25, 2008 polygraphmark from The Woodlands
I bought this for my wife and she is very pleased. I added an extra 512 MB of RAM which cost me $12 and was well worth it. The machine arrived quickly and set up easily. It did not take much getting used to the track ball. Windows XP is my preferred OS and that was a plus. Fast shipping and great service by Buy.Com.

3 of 5Needs Repair Saturday, May 24, 2008 Michael from Covington, GA
I bought 4 of these notebooks. These notebooks have a problem right out of the box. The problem is the ethernet & wireless networking. I have found if you uninstall the think advantage connection software and uninstall the ethernet & wireless networking and download the updated drivers from Lenovo's website and install them these notebooks will work great. I have done this process on all 4 notebooks and I havent't had a single networking problem. Don't even think that Lenovo will help you they won't unless you pay them 99 bucks.

4 of 5Problems out of the box. After reinstall of image, Saturday, May 24, 2008 duorah from Cupertino CA
I installed 2GB of RAM immediately which brought the total RAM to 2.5Gb. Initial setup had a lot of intermittent problems with both wired and wirelss networks. It mainly would not be able to contact the DHCP server on my network to get an IP address. After struggling with this for some time, after which it stopped wotking with the network altogether, I installed the image - this is a nice feature. Just press ThinkVantage button and you can reinstlal the factory image.
After that, I went through a full update of Thinkpad drivers and Windows XP and voila, everything worked perfect. Not my sleep works great, it connects to both wired and wireless network immediately and I am pretty happy with it.
This is a basic laptop - so it is bulky with a low batter life. But it works great for the price.

4 of 5What do you expect for the price? Saturday, May 24, 2008 A Customer from Madison, AL
For $399, it does what a basic laptop should do. Internet, programs, etc. I had some problems with the wireless setup at first, but now it works fine. For 90% of the users out there who are not programmers, music/video producers or graphic artists (i.e. people who need intense graphics and/or CPU speed), this laptop is fine. The button for the mouse is a little annoying to use, but I suppose one could buy a usb mouse and plug it in.
Overall, worth the money.

5 of 5Excellent Laptop Saturday, May 24, 2008 Dr B from Orlando,FL
I was hesitant to buy it as it had a celeron and only XP home. I was pleasantly surprised when it came with XP pro. The laptop is solid and boot time is extremely short. It is very well made and has all the Think pad advantages. The only point to note that there is no touch pad. I use a wireless mouse any way and do not find it a problem, I bought three and I am happy to have made an excellent decision
Buy.com handled the shipping well and I received it in 3 days.

5 of 5Least Expensive Lenovo ThinkPad Sunday, May 18, 2008 Bill from Orlando, FL
The R61e is an excellent value at less than $500.
Additional memory is a must (2GB PC-5300 can be purchased for < $50). This is one of several R61e purchased as an "entry level" notebook. For most business applications (Internet, Office, email, etc.) or student applications this notebook will perform well. Lenovo's customer support is also good (had a problem with a battery).

5 of 5Great product, great support Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Gabor from Sunnyvale, CA
It is an XP machine, so I don't know how their Vista version is supported, but this is great in a sense, that you can create a Restore disk, which is very important in case your computer crashes. Most OEMs just provide you a Restore disk, that wipes everyithing out (reformats) on you computer, data, programs everything. Restore disk is not the same as sytem restore. My other XP does not let me make a Restore Disk.

5 of 5My second unit is as good as the first! Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Stuart Hill from Deming, NM
I bought a second R61e for my neighbor, unboxed it, set it up for her, and it works great. NO WIRELESS issues as far as I could see, so maybe the other user was in over their head. I did bump the ram on this one to 1024, but the XP runs fast and she loves the laptop and the durability. If Buy.Com gets more in stock, you can't beat this deal!

1 of 5Great deal, but big driver issues! Thursday, May 08, 2008 A Customer from Bellevue, WA
I spent hours trying to get the wireless to work on this laptop...out of the box! After doing some investigating, it appears a number of other users are having intermittent wireless issues with the R61e. I'm a huge Lenovo fan, but am returning this laptop to Buy.com and would not recommend it to others.

4 of 5Can't believe they sell it as is... Monday, May 05, 2008 Rob from IL
Overall satisfied with the purchase, but if you plan on using the XP that is installed you will need to call Lenovo and download a few drivers within the first couple of times of using it. The network adaptor drivers need to be updated, because it will work the first time you connect to your network, but some how it won't later on. Kind of hit or miss. It even corrupted my wireless network adaptor to the point where it didn't think there was one installed at one point. Before considering the lengthy process of updating Windows or moving personal info to this unit I would get the drivers updated first and insure that that is working properly first. Its kind of hard for me to believe that Lenovo would ship these units out the door with this known issue. But all in all, its a decent computer for a good price, which appears to have just gotten better. I paid $450 for this two weeks ago and now its $400. Should have waited, but who know. If your still in the market for XP Pro. this is a pretty good deal.

5 of 5Super laptop for this price!! Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Stuart Hill from Deming, NM
I bought this as a "back-up" laptop to travel with. I bumped the ram and hard drive, reloaded it with Vista HP and WOW! It runs like a race car. The screen is great, everything set up easily, and I really like this machine! Hope more people will take advantage of this great deal!

4 of 5Great Laptop.........once you fix the drivers issu Friday, April 18, 2008 bailey.2021 from Melbourne, FL
I've used thinkpads for seven years with my former employer. They have always been very durable. I started with a new company and using my Sony Vaio at work was not going well. The Vaio although a very nice laptop, is not built to take the abuse of being carried around all day. The thinkpad is very sturdy but I had big problems when I first received it. Right out of the box the laptop was able to recognize the wireless network at my office and performed flawlessly. However, the next day after restarting the laptop, it could not find the wireless network. I had not changed any settings. It turns out that after rebooting, the laptop will configure itself to it's surrounding networks. I called customer support only to find out that Lenovo only provides free tech support for hardware and because the wireless radio on the unit was working fine then any software support would cost $99. That's on a laptop that I only purchased two days prior. After three days on the phone with tech support (no I did not pay the $99, I kept calling the Lenovo support line till they got tired of hearing from me) I finally found a tech support agent that knew how to fix the problem. There were four drivers that needed to be downloaded and replaced. Once installed it worked fine, but the three days of trying to figure out the problem were absolutely frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I understand this is a great price on a great laptop, but I never expected any of this. Since then I've had no problems. I did however raise the RAM from 1G to 2G and it was well worth the $44. I still rate this laptop very highly and think it will do the job for at least another two years or so.

5 of 5Good Windows XP Laptop Monday, April 14, 2008 Mark J from Wichita, KS
Bought this laptop because it was priced right and had Lenova brand and it was one of few pc's still available with XP. I had to disable some thinksmart internet software to get this laptop to access internet and work with my home network, allowing only windows software to control security. I couldn't get Lenova tech support or my local isp to support this problem, since it was a software issue. But after getting that resolved, pc has worked great, and came quickly in good shape.
