5 of 5 Best home NAS on the market !!! Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Pete R. from Palos Park, Illinois
I added three 1TB drives from Western Digital Caviar Green and it was up and running in ten minutes. Setup was a breeze and I built the RAID 5 overnight. From any computer on my home network from Windows XP to media center I can access all of my digital pictures and movies. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent product - simply works! Monday, December 15, 2008 Sai N from Monmouth Jct, NJ
The ideal solution for a home office - provides redundancy as well as convenience. If configured as a RAID 5 (with 3 750 GB HDDs) this becomes a 1.5 TB office server, with a one disk redundancy that allows for a single disk failure. This is *not* a substitute for a regular off-site backup, which is still necessary for compete redundancy. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Worded Saturday, December 13, 2008 Kevin from Fairfax, VA
Good: Bought 3 750GB Seagate drives from the compatibility list and all worked as advertised. Let it format the drives RAD 5 overnight and was able to move about 400 GB to it over a 1Gb LAN to it very quickly. (didn't time anything) Seemed faster then if it was an external USB drive. Had an esata drive that wasn't compatible with my Tivo that I connected to it. Works great. Now all the house computers connect to it for Outlook data, Pics, Music, pretty much every thing. The FTP worked great. The iTunes sharing works as advertised. Takes a while for it to index the music (expected with 120GB of it)
Bad: Wish there was built in scheduling to copy data to the esata drive and Tivo desktop server support. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A splendid product - does what it says Sunday, November 30, 2008 Sai N from Monmouth Jct, NJ
This is a precisely defined product that allows the end-user (not necessarily a technical person) to set up a RAID server i their closet. The product does all that it claims to do. It is easy to set up with no need for any additional software to be added.
I was able to open up the box, pull out the rails on which the drives were to be mounted, screw the rails onto the drives, mount them back into the box and close it up, within about 20 minutes. Main item needed - a screwdriver - Phillips or Flat head. Most of the above time was spent getting the drives out of their packaging.
Next, I used the in-the-box ethernet cable to attach the box to my network. Boot-up time! The box immediately found my network, picked up an IP address for itself and came to life. After reading a bit of the literature, I figured out that it could be configured via a web interface. Its IP address is conveniently displayed on the console. I entered http:// and lo! and behold! I saw the admin screen. Logging in with the default account, I changed the password (always the first thing to be done).
The web interface is as intuitive as my router's. I was able to quickly find the way to set up my RAID 5 (I had 3 drives, all the same size and manufacturer - I have bought a fourth one, in case one of these blows up) and started the process.
This was the only part that was disappointing. The box took almost 8 hours to set up the 3 drives in RAID 5 configuration. The drives were 750 GB each - leading to about 1.35 TB of space available - formatted.
Soon I was using the device - safe and secure!
Love the box and would strongly recommend that anyone attempting to set up their own RAID 5 server by building it on the cheap using a box, Linux, a RAID 5 card and hard drives, should look into this box as a labour saver.
Love it! Was this review helpful?
