THE WALL was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. By now, the bassist had firm control of the group's direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, THE WALL was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals--nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.
The story revolves around the fictional Pink Floyd's isolation behind a psychological wall. The wall grows as various parts of his life spin out of control, and he grows incapable of dealing with his neuroses. The album opens by welcoming the unwitting listener to Floyd's show ("In the Flesh?"), then turns back to childhood memories of his father's death in World War II ("Another Brick in the Wall [Part 1]"), his mother's overprotectiveness ("Mother"), and his fascination with and fear of sex ("Young Lust"). By the time "Goodbye Cruel World" closes the first disc, the wall is built and Pink is trapped in the midst of a mental breakdown.
On disc 2, the gentle acoustic phrasings of "Is There Anybody Out There?" and the lilting orchestrations of "Nobody Home" reinforce Floyd's feeling of isolation. When his record company uses drugs to coax him to perform ("Comfortably Numb"), his onstage persona is transformed into a homophobic, race-baiting fascist ("In the Flesh"). In "The Trial" he mentally prosecutes himself, and the wall comes tumbling down.
This ambitious concept album was an across-the-board smash, topping the Billboard album chart for 15 weeks in 1980. The single "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" was the country's best seller for four weeks. THE WALL spawned an elaborate stage show (so elaborate, in fact, that the band was able to bring it to only a few cities) and a full-length film. It also marked the last time Waters and Gilmour would work together as equal partners.

...the title [is] apparently symbolic of the separation between performer and audience. There are other analogies that can be made as to the wall's meaning, yet one thing remains constant and that is Floyd's ability to produce interesting music... As usual, Roger Waters' lyrics are a standout and the playing is tight.

5 of 5 A really great CD for any collection Monday, March 12, 2007
TerryZ from Sacramento, California

Back in 1979 Pink Floyd released this Album and had two shows in the United States to promote it. One was in New York City and the other show was in Los Angeles. Both shows sold out with in minutes. I bought this album when they were still albums. I owned a cassette player and I wanted to transfer this to cassette tape, the current “other” media since the 8-track tapes were on their way out. I had been a Pink Floyd fan since the mid 70’s so I was a follower. To copy this onto cassette, I had a friend do it for me but he didn’t know who Pink Floyd was or hadn’t ever listened to them prior. He copied it and gave me back the album and the cassettes and told me that he now liked Pink Floyd. Any review can make someone think one way or the other but you really have to be your own judge when it comes to this kind of music. It is true, you really do get what you pay for.

5 of 5 Anybody still out there? Wednesday, September 01, 2004
Todd James Hedlund little_blackandwhite_cat from Saint Paul, Minnesota
Take a psychotic Sigmund Freud, a cannabalistic Carl Jung, and throw in a bunch of twisted nightmares. What does that concoction yield? Pink Floyd's masterpiece The Wall. Still considered one of the best rock albums to date (right next to Led Zeppelin and The Rolling stones), it is a timeless work of gargantuan proportions. There will never be a rock group that will EVER replicate the sonic thunder, and subtle attacks on the psyche that "The Wall" continues to propogate even today. Truly, one of the best albums of all-time, and, one of the best rock groups that came from jolly old England. I give it a 10-plus.

4 of 5 Excellent...but not their best Sunday, May 04, 2003
A Listener from Exton, PA
Great album! One of, but not their best however. I've read that Roger Waters was the only band member that wanted to record this, so the other 3 memebers weren't that "into" it. David Gilmour does call his guitar solo during "Comfortably Numb" the "greatest piece of music I've ever written,". A must have album for any Pink Floyd fan...I just wouldn't make it my first. Go for "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Wish You Were Here".

5 of 5 The Most Relaxing, Mood Changing Album Ever Sunday, April 21, 2002
louisbird from Wilmer, Al
I have found that with this album that a persons whole atttude can change as you listen to it.. I have come in from a really bad day at work, thrown in this album an in a matter of minutes my Mood has changed to a more relaxed one. Roger Waters is one of the greatest song writers of our time. I think if he had been around during the Mozart Era he would surely have been right up there with him. I recommend this album to one and all. Then take it home and put it in your CD player, fill your tub with bath oils and your favorite Lady or Man and just kick back and enjoy the experience.
