| | | The Pulitzer Prize-winning authors of "The Ants" render the extraordinary lives of the social insects--ants, bees, wasps, and termites--in this visually spectacular volume. 110 color and 100 black-and-white illustrations. Annotation: Clocking in at more than 500 pages, THE SUPERORGANISM is an intelligent readable natural history detailing the social lives of swarm and hive creatures like bees, ants, and termites. Avoiding the grandiose, utopian gestures with which many have painted bees, ants, and termites, Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson (whose book THE ANTS won a Pulitzer in 1991) describe the functionality and practicality of the way these insects work together. Each little crawler or buzzer serves a particular purpose, turning the colony into effectively a highly productive "superorganism." Selected by the New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of 2008.
