Frannie never gave much thought to the color of her skin, but then an African-American girl named Celeste moves to Frannie's Oklahoma hometown in the early 1960s. When both girls are chosen for a special vocal ensemble, they become friends. But others don't accept the idea of integration, and Frannie discovers a dark secret from the town's past threatens her friendship with Celeste.
