From the Publisher
This identification guide contains more than 5,000 full-color painted illustrations by David Sibley, the artist/ornithologist who has inherited the mantle of Roger Tory Peterson.
Sibley's beautiful and meticulous paintings depict every bird native to North America, species by species, in taxonomic order. Eight hundred species are fully described, but with the addition of illustrations and data on sub-species, variants, and accidentals, the total number of birds covered is 1100.
Each species is shown in 6 to 18 paintings, in full -- in flight, from above and below; both genders, juvenile and mature, in every year's variation of plumage; seated (or perched) and standing -- and in detail: tail, beak, wing, a row of spots, other signifiers that help in identification.
For each species there is a voice description (information not given in the Nat Geo guides). Each also has a 4-color map showing summer and winter ranges, breeding grounds, migration routes, and locations where vagrants have been seen.
Front matter includes a detailed lesson on how to use this guide; back matter includes a full species index.
Annotation: Not merely a guide to bird-watching, this book provides a vast array of information on birds, including detailed essays on anatomy and behavior, plus information on migration, nesting, and much more. The book is illustrated with nearly 800 paintings as well as with useful maps and charts, and it contains a glossary and a species checklist.
