| | | Perhaps no book has had a more profound impact on intellectual and spiritual lives than "The Road Less Traveled." In his new Introduction, Dr. Peck recalls how this book evolved from his own early ideas as a therapist who was just beginning his own spiritual growth. Annotation: One of the most successful self-help books of the 20th century, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED stayed on the New York Times Best Seller List for 10 years, and has sold millions of copies. Morgan Scott Peck begins simply: "Life is difficult." His main message is that life is about change, and that personal growth is a process or a journey for which each person bears responsibility. Peck's background as a psychiatrist informs much of this book. He uses terms and concepts such as "transference" and "cathexis," and refers to case studies of his patients to illustrate his points. However, the key words in the book are simple ones that carry much weight: discipline, which he says is required to solve life's problems; love, which he reworks and clarifies in an extended meditation on what true love is and is not; and grace, which is the highest goal--an awareness of, and aspiration to a powerful force outside of us. Throughout the book, there is a call for responsibility, for values and good behavior, and for a sense of both independence and interdependence. Peck's insight into human suffering, his rigorous call for discipline, and his grasp of the importance of the spiritual dimension in a good life appeal to modern readers and make THE PATH LESS TRAVELED a work that stands out in the self-help field.
| PraiseNational Catholic Reporter "A book for our times...[Peck's] discussion of love is the freshest since Erich Fromm's and his approach to spirituality is simultaneously honest and understandable.....[The book] meets our culture directly, encourages us to move forward and points a trustworthy finger in the direction of wholeness." - Gerald G. MayParents Magazine "Much in the manner of Rollo May...An inspiring discussion of healthy emotional growth." Wall Street Journal "Dr. Peck's book is valuable and sometimes brilliant in its insistence that there is no distinction between the process of achieving spiritual growth and achieving mental growth. There is freshness and originality here." - Edmund Fuller Washington Post "Not just a book but a spontaneous act of generosity." - Phyllis Theroux |
| Author Bio| Morgan Scott Peck | | M. (Morgan) Scott Peck, son of a lawyer, has a B.A. from Harvard (cum laude, 1958) and an M.D. degree from Case Western Reserve (1963). After serving as a doctor in the U.S. Army, he opened a private psychiatric practice. In 1978, his book THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED was published and, over the next few years, became a mega-seller. In his many books, Peck advocates facing problems with a realistic attitude, using psychotherapy as a way to achieve the self-knowledge necessary to live life fully. One of his frequently quoted maxims is: "Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult." |
