| | | Part love story, part murder mystery, Banks remarkable novel engages questions of class, politics, art, love, and madness. Unabridged. 8 CDs. Annotation: In this cinematic, romantic, and action-packed bestseller from Russell Banks (AFFLICTION, THE SWEET HEREAFTER), Jordan Groves, a leftist artist and adventurer in the Hemingway-mold, lands his pontoon plane on a lake in a pristine forest reserve in the Adirondacks, a getaway for wealthy families whose luxury has gone untouched by the ravages of The Great Depression. He's met on the shore by Vanessa, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy doctor with a history of ruined marriages and mental illness in her background. Soon the two, despite their icy sparring with each other, are hopelessly entangled with each other, and as issues of class, politics, tradition, and war swirl around them, the two find themselves at the center of a catastrophic erotic epic. Though some may be put off by Banks' embrace of larger-than-life themes, most readers will find themselves thoroughly immersed in the beauties and contradictions of the lush setting and dynamic characters.
| Praise| "[A} riveting narrative, featuring an almost pot-boiling love story set against a backdrop of global unrest and clearly demarcated class tensions....a high-combustion mix of eros and thanatos." - Sven Birkerts 01/27/2008 |
| Author Bio| Russell Banks | | Russell Banks grew up in New Hampshire, the son of an alcoholic laborer who deserted the family when Banks was 12. He dropped out of Colgate University, where he went on a scholarship, after two months, uncomfortable with its image of wealth and privilege. Banks has four daughters and has been married four times; his second wife put him through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Banks has lived in and taught at Princeton, and also has shared with his fourth wife--Chase Twichell, a poet--a house in the upstate New York town of Keene Valley, a community not unlike those in which many of his novels are set. In additional to writing novels, Banks is a dedicated and prolific short-story writer. In all his fiction, he chooses to explore an essentially male, working class world comprised of men in crisis who have trouble understanding the uncomfortable situations in which they find themselves. |
