| | | "They found him in Ponta Por?, a pleasant little town in Brazil, on the border of Paraguay, in a land still known as the Frontier.
They found him living in a shaded brick house on Rua Tiradentes, a wide avenue with trees down the center and barefoot boys dribbling soccer balls along the hot pavement.
They found him alone, as best they could tell, though a maid came and went at odd hours during the eight days they hid and watched..." (from the first line)They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in a small town in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him. Annotation: A man attends his own funeral then flees to Brazil with $90 million, where he lives happily ever after with Eva Miranda, a sexy lawyer who keeps his money safe and untraceable. For four years, Patrick Lanigan lives this fairytale life until bounty hunter Jack Stephano tracks him down and holds him hostage, waiting for Lanigan to divulge the location of the money. But the truth is that Lanigan really doesn't know. Eva Miranda has been shuttling the money from back to bank: When Lanigan doesn't call her at their daily arranged time, she alerts the F.B.I. and disappears. It's time for Lanigan to pay the piper, but which one? How much? And where is that $90 million anyway?
| PraiseKirkus "Grisham comes up with a masterfully bittersweet end...his best-plotted novel yet." 02/01/1997 |
| Author Bio| John Grisham | | John Grisham woke up at 5:00 every morning for three years to complete his first novel, A TIME TO KILL. Working as a lawyer and a member of Mississippi's state legislature, Grisham published his debut thriller with a small and somewhat unknown publisher, receiving only local readership in his home state. He finally burst on to the national scene with his second novel, THE FIRM, a legal thriller that sold millions of copies and stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for 47 weeks. Shortly afterward, Grisham moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where he began working on a series of new legal thrillers, including THE PELICAN BRIEF and THE CLIENT, all of which became bestsellers and were subsequently made into successful films. Having graduated from Ole Miss with a law degree in 1981, Grisham went on to base his popular thrillers on his experience as a specialist in criminal defense. His once-unknown debut, A TIME TO KILL, was made into a major motion picture in 1996. |
