| Author Bio| Edward George Bulwer-Lytton | | Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton (first Baron Lytton) was the author of popular works of fiction, including THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII. He is also renowned as the author of the immortal opening line, "It was a dark and stormy night" (from his 1830 novel, PAUL CLIFFORD), which has inspired the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, in which entrants attempt to write an equally dreadful first sentence. Bulwer-Lytton was a child prodigy, graduating from Cambridge at the age of 20, soon after which he began publishing poetry and novels. He married a beautiful, fiery Irishwoman; when, after two children, his philandering caused a separation, his vengeful ex-wife tormented him for 40 years with abusive tirades, scathing letters to the press, slanderous accusations, and novels in which he appeared as an evil character; he sought his own revenge by using his influence to sabotage her writing success. Partly as a result of their public disputes, Bulwer-Lytton curtailed his promising career as a radical member of Parliament and devoted himself to his own writing. His novels include historical romances in the tradition of Scott, crime fiction, occult thrillers, ghost stories, and even a science-fiction novel. He also wrote poetry and plays. Bulwer-Lytton was never a critical success but was immensely popular: in the words of Edmund Gosse, "Everything he wrote sold as if it were bread displayed to a hungry crowd." |
