Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Muhal Richard Abrams (piano); Marty Ehrlich (alto saxophone, clarinet). | | Producers: Muhal Richard Abrams, Marty Ehrlich. | | Multi-reed player Marty Ehrlich has actively explored the possibilities of duet performances, most notably on FALLING MAN with bass player Anthony Cox. These six pieces combine Ehrlich with pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, one of the key players to emerge from the same '60s Chicago AACM scene that brought forth the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Abrams's long and varied background makes him an ideal match for a duo setting. | | Two of his own pieces are included, "Marching With Honor" and "Crossbeams." On these, and throughout the rest of the set, he fearlessly jumps from chordal rhythmic propulsion and underscoring to free-flying bursts of higher octave explorations. Ehrlich's "The Price of the Ticket" is a gorgeous number that draws on gospel figures with aplomb. The set concludes with "Blue to You," a wonderful glimpse of two well-matched players listening to and playing off one another with genuine glee, as they move between scored and freely improvised passages. | Engineer: Douglas E. Dahl |

| Professional Reviews |
| JazzTimes (8/97, p.103) - "...Here [Ehrlich] gets to flex his creativity alongside Abrams on a Brooklyn Museum outdoor concert. One of the finer aspects of this date is the framework it offers for Abrams the pianist, free of the arduous responsibilites of composing for large ensemble..." |
