When things look the darkest in Orange Beach, Alabama, a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up to communicate what he calls "a little perspective." "The Noticer" is a unique narrative blend of fiction, allegory, and inspiration.

Annotation:
Andy Andrews, author of THE TRAVELER'S GIFT, presents this modern-day fable of a man named Jones who appears in times of trouble and provides a bit of perspective on people's problems. Combating conventional wisdom and cliché, which teaches us to focus on the "big picture," Jones preaches the importance of the little things, showing how a few small changes in our everyday interactions can have huge positive effects on the lives of everyone we cross paths with.

The Noticer by Andy Andrews - Book Review

Jones (or Garcia or Chen, depending on your nationality) is an ageless old man who shows up for 23-year-old Andy under the pier. But instead of allowing Andy to grovel in the self-pity his situation warrants, Jones challenges him to "get started...start noticing a few things. We need to check your heart. We need to gather a little perspective" (p. 5). Then he gives Andy a few biographies to read and leaves but keeps reappearing until Andy is on his feet. This first incident in The Noticer by Andy Andrews is typical of what happens in this parable-type story of meaningful encounters that Jones engineers with people who are at crisis crossroads....read the full review

Read A Chapter

Chapter One

His name was Jones. At least, that''s what I called him. Not Mr. Jones ... just Jones. He called me "young man" or "son." And I rarely heard him call anyone else by name either. It was always young man or young lady, child or son.

He was old, but the kind of old that is difficult to quantify. Was he sixty-five or eighty-or a hundred and eighty? And every single time I ever laid eyes on him, he had an old, brown suitcase close at hand.

Me? I was twenty-three when I saw him for the first time. He held out his hand, and for some reason, I took it. Looking back on the moment, I think that act in itself was a small miracle. Any other time, and with any other person, considering my circumstances, I might have cowered in fear or come out with my fists flying.

I had been crying, and he heard me, I guess. My cries were not the muffled sobs of loneliness or the whimpering of discomfort-though certainly I was lonely and un

4 of 5 A great to read - Thursday, July 09, 2009
kmlcerkml from Forsyth, GA

The Noticer by Andy Andrews is a wonderful inspirational story about a man named "Jones" who drifts around a southern town and encounters people when they need him the most. It seems that when someone is at a crossroads in their life "Jones" not Mr. Jones, just "Jones" is always around to help you through that crossroads. He has so many words of wisdom that I often wondered if these events actually happened. It seems to me that this is a book that is meant to make you think about your own life and what you can do to help yourself as well as what you can do to help others as you live your every day life. You do not need to do extraordinary things in order to help a person - sometimes it is just being there and offering some reassurance. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would read another of his books in the future.

5 of 5 Worth a look Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Jodi from Des Moines, IA
This little book, under 200 pages, packs a powerful punch. It is the story of a man named Jones, who comes to a small beach town in Alabama and quietly turns many of the residents' lives upside-down. The story begins with Jones meeting the author of the book at a low point in his life. Jones gives the author some tough advice and his story is followed throughout the book. His is not the only life that is touched, however. Jones comes into many lives and seems to know just the right thing to say or to suggest to alter their perspective to what it needs to be to solve their particular problems. There are many layers to this book, pulling from several schools of thought that I've been exposed to recently. It hits on some of the basic principles of these, applying them to each character's situation. The 'answer' is not the same for every person, but the main way to get there is through a change of perspective. We all have filters we see life through and sometimes our filters aren't working in a way that is best for us. Sometimes our filters are actually blinders. Once we are aware of this, we can work to adjust our perspective to one of truth rather than the lies we may believe. This book is a nice little read, getting the point across with an enjoyable story line. I would recommend this book to anyone, as I imagine its message would apply to nearly everyone. It's worth a few hours of your time to read.
