"The mowing machine's whirring sounded cheerfully from the old buffalo wallow south of the claim shanty, where the blue sky grass stood thick and tall and Pa was cutting it for hay..." (from the first line)

Almanzo Wilder makes a dangerous trip to secure wheat to save the village from starvation during the terrible winter of 1880-81.

Annotation:
This is the sixth book in the highly acclaimed and beloved series of books chronicling the life of Laura Ingalls who lived at the end of the 19th century. The year that Laura was 13 and living in the Dakota Territory, there was a severe winter that lasted seven months, with blinding blizzards that came so quickly, people got lost in them and died. With no train able to bring supplies, the families in the little town were slowly starving, until Almanzo and another young man made a risky journey to buy some wheat to save the town.

Author Bio

Garth Williams illustrated several classic books for children including STUART LITTLE and CHARLOTTE'S WEB, both written by E. B. White, as well as all the books in Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series. Williams and his family moved around a lot during his childhood, giving him the opportunity to live not only in the United States, but also Canada and England. Upon reaching adulthood and returning to the United States, Williams tried to get a job illustrating for "The New Yorker" magazine, but his artistic style was considered too "European." However, it was "New Yorker" contributor E. B. White himself who suggested that Williams illustrate STUART LITTLE. In addition to illustrating the works of other authors, Williams also wrote and illustrated his own books, such as THE RABBITS' WEDDING.
