| Author Bio| Rebecca West | | Born Cicily Isabel Fairfield, Rebecca West took her name from a strong and independent female character in the Ibsen play ROSMERSHOLM. She began her career as a journalist in 1911, writing on political issues, particularly feminism and social reform. Her first published book was a study of Henry James (1916). Throughout her long and distinguished career, West wrote eight novels as well as biographies, criticism, satire, and travel books, including an important book on Yugoslavia, BLACK LAMB AND GREY FALCON. In 1914, she gave birth to a son, Anthony West, as a result of her liaison with H. G. Wells. Anthony West published a novel, HERITAGE, based on his childhood. (Rebecca West said of the novel, "It is a tissue of damaging lies, told with the utmost malice.") In 1930 she married Henry Andrews, a banker, and lived with him on an estate in Buckinghamshire until his death in 1968, when she returned to London, where she lived until she died at the age of 90. West was a brilliant, colorful, opinionated, articulate, and passionate woman, and an important force in the intellectual life of the 20th century. |
