"It was the morning when Jonathan first heard the bell. He was standing in the warm, open field feeling hot, dirty and bored. His father, not far off, limped as he worked along the newly turned rows of corn. As for Jonathan, he was daydreaming, daydreaming about being a soldier..." (from the first line)

"At thirteen, Jonathan dreams of fighting in the American Revolution. Almost by accident, he is recruited into a fighting unit and experiences the reality of war, including being taken prisoner and coming to grips with his feelings about shooting to kill".--School Library Journal. 1984 ALA Notable Children's Book; NCSS/CBC Notable 1984 Children's Trade Book in Social Studies; 1984 ALA Best Books for Young Adults.

Annotation:
Thirteen-year-old Jonathan dreams of fighting in the Revolutionary War. Within 24 hours, his dream comes true--he is recruited and joins the battle, only to be captured by Hessian soldiers. He manages to escape and return home, but he has changed from a boy to a man, his dreams of glory shattered by the horrible reality of war.

Praise
ALAN Review
"A taut, fast-paced novel that builds to a shattering climax."
