Duke Wolff was a flawless specimen of the American clubman -- a product of Yale and the OSS, a one-time fighter pilot turned aviation engineer. Duke Wolff was a failure who flunked out of a series of undistinguished schools, was passed up for military service, and supported himself with desperately improvised scams, exploiting employers, wives, and, finally, his own son.
In The Duke of Deception, Geoffrey Wolff unravels the enigma of this Gatsbyesque figure, a bad man who somehow was also a very good father, an inveterate liar who falsified everything but love.

4 of 5 I like the way the book was written. Tuesday, August 13, 2002
A Reader from Washington, DC

Geoffrey Wolff writes of his journey in life with his father "Duke." Duke's deceptive character, from his own family, his finances, his education, and work experience. Duke becomes thrown from one job to another, from one side of the country to another, even abroad. Though Duke deceives everyone, he still encourages Geoff to become well-educated and encourages him to write. I definitely have empathy for Geoff and what he went through with his father. The language Geoff uses gives one a clear picture of his aches and pains of living with unfaithful parents and a couple of divorces, yet he still manages to come up from the ashes and start his life anew by becoming a writer.
