The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo is the first full-length bluegrass album from actor/comedian/musician Steve Martin. After playing on the Grammy Award winning Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Earl Scruggs, Martin began writing a string of new banjo songs, some with lyrics and some as instrumentals. An album forty-five years in the making, The Crow features special appearances by Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Mary Black, Tim O'Brien, Earl Scruggs, Pete Wernick and Tony Trischka. Recorded in Dublin, Hollywood, Nashville and New Jersey and produced by John McEuen, of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the album consists of fifteen original tracks written by Martin. I have loved the banjo my whole life," says Martin. "The songs on this record represent the influence of a dozen players and a thousand tunes, and I thank them all. But it's the banjo itself I thank most for generating nostalgia for experiences I never had, joy I was yet to experience, and melancholy that was yet to come." "Steve shows the same skill at crafting a story within the lyric of a song as he does with a novel or comedic script," according to producer John McEuen. "People will be pleasantly shocked at how vast and varied this music is. This album will show Steve as a composer of unique melodies, hot licks and soulful lyrics. He is definitely a songwriter with an unusual twist for notes and lyrics." The Crow comes packaged with a 24-page booklet, featuring Steve's writing on the role the banjo has played in his life, along with his inspiration for each song that appears on the album."

Notes & Personnel Info
Personnel: Steve Martin (banjo).
Audio Mixer: Nick Sevilla.
The banjo has been a major player in Steve Martin's act since his earliest days of stand-up. Back in the era of wild 'n' crazy guys and arrows through heads, the comedian's bluegrass breakdowns seemed just another puzzle piece to his absurdist shtick. However, four decades into a career of comedy, movies, novels, and memoirs, Martin proves his banjo love no passing fancy on his dead-serious 2009 musical debut, THE CROW. It's a somber yet fun affair that ranges from rollicking instrumentals like "Hoedown at Alice's" and "Tin Roof" (on which he is joined by fellow comedian-musician Eugene Levy) to the rich country balladry of "Pretty Flowers" (featuring Dolly Parton & Vince Gill in gentle duet). The only time Martin regresses to silliness comes on "Late for School," a dizzying, sweet, and downright hilarious narrative of a dash to beat the opening bell told from the frantic schoolboy's perspective.

5 of 5 Steve Martin Does It Again! Monday, August 03, 2009
Martin from Tulsa, Oklahoma

In its own way, it is as good as any of his old comedy albums. Although no humor is involved in this, it is wonderful to listen to, either as background music or to take your mind off the pressing issues of the day. The music is thoughtful and up to date. Not the twangy stuff you might normally think of when referring to banjo music. The accompanying backgrounds are perfect in their richness, but do not overpower Martin's banjo. He can sing pretty well too. I don't see how anyone couldn't love this album.
