| | | In his daring work, Wilson states that Nature is a universal value--one that serves without discrimination the interests of all humanity--and proposes an alliance between science and religion to save Earth's vanishing biodiversity. Annotation: A scientists asks, "How can we save the planet?" The answer he comes up with is: religion. Or, rather, science and religion, together. Edward O. Wilson, author of books such as THE NATURE OF LIFE, makes an urgent plea for scientists and religionists to join forces to protect nature in the interest of all humanity. With so much at stake, "the two cultures," to use C.P. Snow's term, may be Earth's last, best hope--if they can work together.
| Praise| "Considering the scope of saving the earth, Wilson's book is a manageable read....well-organized into five sections....His writing is clear and eloquent without being pedantic [and] he presents solid scientific reasons for us to take action now to steward the natural world for future generations." - Christy Honnen January/February 2007 |
| Author Bio| Edward O. Wilson | | Edward Osborne Wilson is an American biologist whose entomological interests led him to write "The Insect Societies" (1971), after which he went on to consider behavior and organization in a variety of animal species in his book "Sociobiology" (1975). The latter title virtually created a new subject dealing with the behavior of species from termites to man, and both books stimulated valuable research and provoked vigorous discussion. Wilson has been the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science and curator in entomology at Harvard University, and is regarded as one of the world's most respected authorities on ants. In addition to two Pulitzer prizes, Wilson has won many scientific awards, including the National Medal of Science and the Crawford Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science. |
