| Author Bio| Astrid Lindgren | | Best known for her series of children's books about the incredibly strong, free-spirited, and red-haired Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren also wrote plays, poetry, short stories, novels, and screenplays. Raised on a farm in Vimmerby, Sweden, Lindgren said that many of her works were inspired by people and events from her childhood. Although she eventually moved to the city of Stockholm, Lindgren remained forever dedicated to farm life and was a key force in lobbying the Swedish government to pass legislation ensuring the natural grazing rights of cattle, pigs, and chickens. The character of Pippi was first created by Lindgren in an attempt to entertain her 7-year-old daughter who was sick in bed with pneumonia, and, although the stories were an entertainment staple in the Lindgren house, it was several years before she attempted to have them published. The first Pippi book was published after it won first prize in a contest sponsored by the publishing house of Raben & Sjoogren. The immense popularity of Lindgren's books made her one of the most beloved authors in Sweden and, on her 80th birthday, her country honored her with a set of 49 commemorative stamps depicting her most memorable characters. Lindgren received many literary awards including the 1958 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her body of work. |
