The Black Album, Jay-Z's tenth and final solo disc, features tracks by Pharrell and Dr. Dre. Cross promotional tie-ins to the disc include the simultaneous release of Jay-Z's S. Carter sneaker in black and The Black Book, an intimate view into the rapper's private life.

Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Personnel includes: Jay-Z (rap vocals); Sharlotte Gibson, Vincent "Hum V" Bostic, John Legend, Don Crawley, Leonard Harris, Kanye West, Danee Doty,
Cedric The Entertainer.
Producers include: The Neptunes, DJ Quik, Eminem, Rick Rubin, Just Blaze.
In what he claims to be his final release as a musical performer, Jay-Z drops THE BLACK ALBUM, a sprawling, ambitious effort that rivals the best work of the rapper's already legendary career. Working with a who's who of hip-hop's most high-profile producers, the outrageously talented MC adjusts his flow and subject matter to the wildly varied tracks, proving once again just how gifted he is as a wordsmith.
From the epic "What More Can I Say" (a collaboration with the Buchannans) to the brutally honest, Eminem-produced "Moment of Clarity," THE BLACK ALBUM bleeds with inspiration. Other highlights include the fuel-injected "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" (featuring Timbaland behind the board), the club-ready "Change Clothes" (which sports the Neptunes' trademark beats), and the old-school stomp of "99 Problems" (with pioneering hip-hop producer Rick Rubin). It makes one wonder how an artist at the peak of his craft could willingly put the microphone down. Hopefully, time out of the spotlight will remind Shawn Carter why he became successful in the first place, and find him back in the studio.

5 of 5 The Black Album was not Jay-Z's biggest album. Wednesday, December 03, 2003
Mikel from Sacramento

Although it was not the best album, Jay-Z still came hard like he always does. He should have made more tracks, and for his last album (so he says) he could have did better. I still liked it, but I know Jay-Z could do better, i heard him do better before.

5 of 5 My Rap On The Black Album (MUST READ) Sunday, November 30, 2003
Slick Rick from Winnipeg Manitoba
Back In The Day after tupac and biggie / i heard of this guy... his name was Jay Z / Called himself Hova, Called himslef Jigga / didnt care much, thought he was just another N***a / In the rap game / but slowly his is fame came / I never gave his words much thought / he'd battled Mobb Deep and was going for Nas / From reasnoble doubt to the second blueprint / i never sat down to think what Jay-Z was sayin / Big Pimpin, Izzo, i thought he was just playin / With shady's and Dre's i passed my day's / But then eventually the great day came / It took 9 Albums for me to understand / that in this Rap Game, Jay-Z alway's had the upperhand/ So now i gotta adress the public and tell them / If u never got Jay-Z get the black album

5 of 5 MUST GO GET! Wednesday, November 26, 2003
A Listener from WILMINGTON, DE
With this cd Jay Z is bringing it back to reasonable doubt, back to the beginning of it all. This is definitely a classic five rating, five mics, five rcords, whatever there is five, this says it all. He uses beat from underground groups like 9th Wonder from Little Brother, to the infamous Kanye West to guru and some other guys you never heard of. He is the truth and after you hear this cd and listen to his lyrics, you truly ask yourself who is going to replace this man??? I dont think anyone can replace Jay Z. He is a martar like Tupac/Biggie/Big Pun/Big L and then there was Jay Z. A true business man and lyricist, he's the best. Gots to be in the hip hop collection.
