4 of 5 Arcade Fun for Baseball Fans Monday, August 13, 2007 John Bradley from Seattle, WA
Overall, The Bigs is a decently fun game for short-attention baseball fans, but it's way too easy to beat in Easy mode and some fairly major issues keep the game from being a real winner.
I hate losing, so I played it on the Easy setting and it was just that... too easy.
When on offense, hitting is absurdly easy... just point the stick to a gap and swing away... which is good since baserunning is a total mess. Players stop running if you don't hand-hold them to a base, and don’t even get me started on controlling multiple runners. I just stocked my team with home run hitters and won every game by a couple of touchdowns.
Pitching was comically unbalanced in Easy mode... giving up 2 runs in a 9-inning game was grounds for disappointment. The game is probably a lot more competitive (and thus more fun) on a harder setting, but with opposing fielders already having uncanny catching ability, I'm not sure I want to find out.
Being able to create a player and build them up is fun, but the whole process is strangely at odds with the idea of baseball as a team sport: the "challenges" overemphasize your rookie's individual stats, with essentially no consideration for your accomplishments when controlling the rest of the team (which is 90% of the time on an AL team).
The Home Run competitions aren't very fun due to the camera movement (the next pitch is released the instant the camera pans back to center, which can be very disorienting), and the Home Run thing in Times Square wasn't anywhere near as good as I hoped.
The Bigs also continues a supremely annoying trend in Xbox 360 games: the manual doesn't mention a word about several key gameplay elements. You'll have to figure these out for yourself. For instance, complete a series against an opponent and you can steal one of their players, at which point a message states "You only get 10 maximum steals" but nowhere does it tell you how many total opponents you will face, nor how to skip/stop a steal.
Overall, despite it's flaws I have to admit I like The Bigs and I'd recommend it to baseball fans who like games they can beat and aren't looking for realism. Just be sure not to waste time playing in Easy mode. The graphics are pretty decent and the "Power Blast" homeruns are terrifically satisfying. The idea of "being" a Major League rookie is kinda awesome, so that alone pushes the game to a 4-star rating. If I could get one of *my* players to rob a home run 30-ft in the air like my opponents do, even just once, it would probably do a lot to offset the negatives. I guess I'll just have to keep trying.... :) Was this review helpful?
