Senator Obama has written a book of transforming power. Only by returning to the principles that gave birth to the Constitution, he says, can Americans repair a political process that is broken, and restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans.

Annotation:
In a few short years, Barack Obama went from being a relatively unknown freshman senator from Illinois to the successful candidate for the presidency in the 2008 election. His success is sometimes credited to his ability as a public speaker, as evidenced in his stunning keynote address at the 2004 Democratic convention. THE AUDACITY OF HOPE follows his best-selling DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, and it offers the visionary pragmatism of his speeches and the candor of his memoir. Each chapter is a developed essay, whether he is discussing partisanship in Washington, the values we have in common, or the importance of the Constitution. He also writes on the positive side of public service, the role that opportunity plays in America's economic health, the enduring dilemma of race, America's place in the world order, and last but not least, how he feels about his family. The personal side comes through in all as he tells anecdotes about the people and experiences that influenced his thought, and as he strives to connect equally to America's founding principles, its rich history, and its future, which he believes in and which he will help shape.

Prologue

It’s been almost ten years since I first ran for political office. I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions.

“Where’d you get that funny name?”

And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nast

5 of 5 An insightful and thoughtful look at America today Monday, April 07, 2008
readobama.com from Chicago, IL

I believe the most compelling arguments for Obama come from himself in his two books. From reading his books I have come to believe that he is a genuine, thoughtful person who cares deeply about all people. He has a keen understanding of America historically, politically, legally, economically, constitutionally and socially. He knows where we have been, where we stand and he has a hopeful vision for our future. His understanding of the issues and policies is deep and nuanced. Most importantly he can bring us back together as a country. He is a unifier. He can help America to focus on those common values and principles that we all believe in. I believe that Obama can bring us back to the point where the ties that bind us together are stronger than those that would tear us apart. He can bring us to a place where we all care about one another and what is best for the country as a whole. He can bring us to a point where we can look beyond our own self interest in order to solve the larger problems of the country and the world. He can bring us to a place where we can be proud to be Americans again. If you are interested in discussing Obama's books please visit http://www.readobama.com
