| | | | Confucious is recognized as China's first and greatest teacher, and his ideas have been the fertile soil in which the Chinese cultural tradition has flourished. Now, here is a translation of the recorded thoughts and deeds that best preserve Confucius -- informed for the first time by the manuscript version found at Dingzhou in 1973, a partial text dating to 55 B.C.E. and only made available to the scholarly world in 1997. The earliest Analects yet discovered, this work provides us with a new perspective on the central canonical text that has defined Chinese culture -- and clearly illuminates the spirit and mind-set of Confucius. Based on the latest research and complete with both Chinese and English texts, this revealing translation serves both as an excellent introduction to Confucian thought and as an authoritative addition to sophisticated debate. Annotation: This series of short sayings, proverbs, and observations on ethics and methods for living originated around 400 B.C.
| Author Bio| Confucius, or K'ung Fu-Tzu was born in the town of Lu, located in the modern Chinese province of Shantung or Shandong. Confucius's life coincided with the second half of the Chou dynasty (c. 1027 to 256 B.C.), a time when feudalism was dying down and chaos was rampant. Confucius relied on ancient teachings and examples to guide his nation. He married at 19, and fathered three children. He became a local administrator, and then a teacher. Eventually forced to leave Lu, Confucius embarked on a series of travels. Upon his return, he wrote on a variety of topics including politics, social issues, religion, ethics, and the arts. The followers of Confucius respected the elder's intelligence, wisdom, and moral character, and compiled many of his writings, including the "Analects". His work and ideas inspired subsequent generations as well as Chinese political thinking, and his texts became standard school curriculum. Though not a religious figure, Confucius touched on quasi-religious themes in his writings to the extent that modern followers have added a spiritual dimension to his legacy. |
