In the year of Darkness, 2029, the rulers of this planet have devised the ultimate plan. They will reshape the future by changing the past. The plan requires something that feels neither pity, pain, nor fear--a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Part man, part machine, the Terminator is sent back to present-day Earth to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), a young woman whose life will have great significance in the years to come. The fate of the world lies with two humans who must defeat an unstoppable killing machine--the Terminator. When casting The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for Kyle Reese, the hero, and Lance Henricksen was cast as the cyborg from the future. But after reading the script, Schwarzenegger asked for the villain's role, and a movie legend was born.

James Cameron's THE TERMINATOR is one of the tightest, tensest sci-fi films ever made and a landmark in the genre. In the year 2029, battles rage between the superintelligent machines that rule the world and the last vestiges of humanity. In late-20th-century Los Angeles, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) suddenly finds herself stalked by an unstoppable killing machine--a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent from the future to kill her and her unconceived son, John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah can rely only on Reese (Michael Biehn), a soldier sent from the future to protect her from the seemingly indestructible Terminator and save humanity. This low-budget masterpiece was the breakthrough film for director Cameron, who weds special effects, thrills, and understated romance to create one of the finest action films of the 1980s, which spawned many imitations but few equals. Science fiction author Harlan Ellison sued over the film's similarities to his own works, especially the OUTER LIMITS episode "Demon with a Glass Hand," and won acknowledgement in the film's credits. Schwarzenegger will forever be known as the relentless Terminator, a heartless killing machine who returns (in a kinder, gentler form) in 1991's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.

I'll never forget the first time I saw James Cameron’s The Terminator. I must have watched that movie at least 100 times during my youth. But during the 101st viewing, the VHS copy I stole from my uncle Dave’s video collection was eaten by my crappy old-school, top-loading VHS player. Damn, that sucked. The Terminator stands as a personal favorite. Schwarzenegger was in his prime in the 1980s -- in guilty pleasures like Commando, Raw Deal, Predator, Conan The Barbarian, and The Running Man. But he gave many kids my age something to hang on to during the Reagan years. Schwarzenegger was our generation's John Wayne, a muscle-bound bodyguard extracting his own kind of vengeance from a cold and dangerous world....read the full review |
