Editor's Note This spin-off from the science-fiction franchise follows John and Sarah Connor after the events of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY. An onslaught of robotic killers from the future are bent on destroying teenager John Connor (Thomas Dekker), humanity's future savior. Standing between them are his determined mother, Sarah (Lena Headey), and Cameron (Summer Glau), a beautiful girl from John's school who turns out to be a Terminator assigned to protect him. They can't run forever, however, and their only chance of survival rests on preventing the creation of Skynet--stopping judgment day and creating a new future for the human race. This collection includes the series' second and final season.

"Why is this happening again?" a 15-year-old John Connor (Thomas Dekker) mutters near the outset of this Fox series, proving that while he might by the future leader of a rebellion against murderous machines, he doesn't understand much at this age about Hollywood math. Credibly expanding the Terminator franchise into TV, this series faces a considerable challenge -- beginning with the usual contortions of time-travel logic -- to maintain its initial pace without devolving into silliness, but under director David Nutter and show-runner Josh Friedman, the first two hours roll a slick brand extension off this profitable assembly line...Occupying a window between T2 -- which featured the assault on a barely pubescent John -- and the 20-something version in T3, the pilot finds Sarah Connor (300's Lena Headey) vigilantly guarding her teenage son, never knowing when the next portal-popping threat from the future will send them scurrying into retreat...Fox is wisely seeking to leverage all these hormonal assets for everything they're worth, launching the show (which, with nine completed hours, is scheduled to run through early March) to benefit from heavy promotion during the NFL playoffs, as 24 has in the past. Moreover, the series will zap over to Mondays, taking up residence in an hour where Heroes's absence should free up action-hungry eyeballs...Strategically it all makes perfect sense, provided that Friedman and company can continue meeting the daunting task of oiling the tracks on this thrill ride. "No one is ever safe," Sarah tells her very-important son -- advice that's as true for a sci-fi series facing this many creative hurdles as it is for the world's eventual savior. - Brian Lowry

An overly familiar franchise often has about as much chance of success as a pat "star vehicle." You know, one of those shows built around someone famous in the hope that fame will bring in tons of viewers. But what usually happens is there's no real story, no real heart, no real necessity for its creation and no emotional connection to the actual star...Fox, desperate for something it makes to take hold, decided to tap into the Terminator film franchise for its newest series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which tells the story of one very determined mother whose son, John, will grow up to lead the resistance against the machines that have taken over the world. For more information on this, just ask your local DVD store clerk, who will no doubt roll his eyes and toss three decently entertaining movies onto the counter...Only in the second episode is there any real attempt at a believable backstory (which will be too late for savvy viewers). Deep into the second episode is also the first time the writers try to inject any kind of humor (and fail). Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles could have been a lot more enjoyable and pop-culture cool if it loosened up the writing (and improved it tenfold)...Truly ambitious series, like Lost, at least put some thought into their mythology. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles relies on the movie franchise as its backbone, revealing a kind of laziness that immediately hurts this spin-off. By the time the second hour comes on Monday and tries to give these characters some dimension, you already know that the talent on both sides of the camera simply isn't there to make this a worthwhile trip...In fact, the primary plot objective of The Sarah Connor Chronicles is to run, run, run. Sarah and John and cyborg Cameron are in constant flight but forget to tell us along the way why we should care whether they get caught or killed. After the first two episodes, running away doesn't seem like such a bad idea. - Tim Goodman
