Notes & Personnel Info
For the most part, Cabaret Voltaire doesn't so much dissect its own material as update it--you can recognize in these somewhat minimal remixes the skeletal remains of the original works. This collection re-tools CabVolt's vituperative mid-'80s synth-funk period, highlighting tracks from THE CRACKDOWN, MICRO-PHONIES, and the DRINKING GASOLINE EP.
"24-24" and "Crackdown" ovulate and chirp upon carriages of stripped-down rhythm, as Kirk re-designs the soundscapes surrounding them in realization of contemporary digital beat mosaics. "Kino" gets the most radical re-vamping of the bunch, as the hard-funk sequencers of yesteryear return in full, brute force. "I Want You" appears twice, one version disassembled and re-constituted CabVolt-style, the other given a widescreen sweep and swirl via the machines of Altern-8, who whip up the track's acid rain into a veritable radioactive windstorm. Galloping synths sound the trumpet call to advance, robot voices are engulfed in the void, and the apocalypse begins. Remixed and remodeled, or pure and undiluted, the Cabs remain the unsung ancestors of the pre-techno revolution.
