| | Artist Overview | | Part hip-hop, part alternative pop-rock, the sound of Harlem native Kelis turned heads with the singer's 1999 debut release, KALEIDOSCOPE. Her striking image (she sported a multi-colored afro) didn't hurt her high profile either. While mixing rock and hip-hop had been done before (Neneh Cherry, etc.), Kelis updated it all new millennium-style, scoring a signature hit in the provocative "Milkshake," and in the process proving herself to be one of rap's most promising and groundbreaking artists. You'll remember Kelis as the shrieking harpie with the multicoloured hair who hated you... so much right now. Here though, on her third album (second if you're American, her label didn't consider it worthwhile releasing 2001's 'Wanderland' over there) she's had a makeover that leaves her looking like Donna Summer and sounding - at her best - like Roberta Flack. 'Tasty', though haunted by more than a few sops to the slick-soul zeitgeist, is an impressive return, thanks to an impressive production team that includes The Neptunes and Dallas Austin. It's their work that shows Kelis at her best, Austin's work on 'Keep It Down' taking her closer to metal than rap, a culture clash that we really should have more of.
