(C) (P) 2006 SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT

With Taking The Long Way, one of the most anticipated albums in recent years, the Dixie Chicks are putting themselves out there like never before. For the first time, every one of the disc's fourteen songs are co-written by the Chicks themselves, exploring themes both deeply private and resoundingly political.

Collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin (who has worked with everyone from Johnny Cash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Run DMC to Neil Diamond), the biggest-selling female band in history has truly pushed themselves to new heights both as writers and as performers. "Everything felt more personal this time," says Maines. "I go back to songs we've done in the past and there's just more maturity, depth, intelligence on these. They just feel more grown-up." Inspired by such classic rock artists as the Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the Mamas and the Papas, Taking The Long Way adds a sweeping, Southern California vibe to the Chicks' down-home intimacy. That ambition is matched with lyrics addressing everything from small-town narrow-mindedness ("Lubbock or Leave It") to the psychology of celebrity ("Everybody Knows"). "This album was about finding a balance in the different aspects of our lives," says Emily Robison, "but there's something thematic there, too--it's really about being bold."

At the time of TAKING THE LONG WAY's release, the lyrical content of a high-profile album by a big-deal artist hadn't been the topic of such public scrutiny since Eminem was still a hot topic. The Dixie Chicks certainly had to have seen this coming, though, after they withstood a firestorm of insults, threats, and boycotts for criticizing George W. Bush's policies. "Not Ready to Make Nice" and "Lubbock or Leave It" (among others) make it clear, however, that the Chicks have no intention of retreating a single step from their convictions. Similarly, the fact that TAKING THE LONG WAY is as much a pop album as it is contemporary country should not be misinterpreted as an abandonment of the factions that turned against the group during the controversy in question.
The soaring pop choruses and dashes of string orchestration that vie for space with acoustic picking and steel guitar swells should rather be seen in the context of a group that's been evolving toward a pop/country amalgam for some time. (Don't forget that one of their biggest hits was a Fleetwood Mac cover.) If anything, the expansive sonic approach and forthright themes simply stand to show that the Chicks have transcended genre pigeonholes. There's still plenty of country in their sound, but with LONG WAY the trio belongs to the larger world at last.

5 of 5 Impressive Sunday, April 08, 2007
A Listener from Prospect, CT
I'd never heard these ladies until they got the Grammy. I just wanted to see what the buzz was about. This isn't country music. They wrote, sang and played these songs. At least 3/4 of the tracks were very good to excellent.

5 of 5 Excellent CD Thursday, November 23, 2006
A Listener from Danbury, CT
I was not a fan before but I decided to pickup this CD after all of the controversy. I was not disappointed. Excellent music with edgy lyrics. I am now going to buy their earlier works and will try to catch them in concert if they come to the North East.

I wish they would come up with faster melodies like these but, hey, this is not a manufacturing plant, these are accomplished artists! Really worth the wait, I am enjoying every track.

5 of 5 This is THE BEST Dixie Chicks' CD Yet!!! Sunday, June 18, 2006
LG from Melbourne, FL
This compilation is very moving, powerful, and simply, AWESOME. The music, lyrics, and voices are without a doubt the best the Dixie Chicks have produced thus far. It comes from the heart, it's original, and even if the country radio stations are afraid to play it, maybe satellite or other genre stations will! But so, WE CAN BUY IT HERE! ;-) EXCELLENT! BRAVO! KUDOS TO THE DIXIE CHICKS ON A VERY WELL DONE CD!!!!!!!

5 of 5 Wow! this album is amazing Wednesday, May 24, 2006
S. Mitchell from Aliso Viejo, CA
I'm not a country fan, but then, I guess the Chicks aren't country anymore either. Regardless, this album is gritty, lovely, raw, thought-provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable with fantastic melodies. I'm already humming their first single in my head throughout my workday. Two thumbs- way up!
