Ryan Cabrera's budding career has grown quickly from hobby, to local star status in his Dallas hometown, to the very real promise of international acclaim. And while that might seem like a leap at this early stage, it doesn't seem so far from reality when you see the fan websites that have dedicated themselves to the singer for over a year now. It's this grassroots word of mouth that has been buzzing of late with the release of Take It All Away, the 21-year-old's Atlantic debut. Produced by the Goo Goo Dolls' John Rzeznik and Cabrera, the album features irresistible pop-rock punctuated by one undeniable chorus after another, lifted by the liberal use of soaring vocal harmonies. In addition to songwriting contributions from Rzeznik, Cabrera was joined by Sabelle Breer and Curt Frasca, who penned two tracks on Avril Lavigne's multi-platinum debut; Guy Chambers, who has written for Robbie Williams; and more. Cabrera is managed by Joe Simpson, manager and father of popstar Jessica Simpson.

Golden-spiked pop/rock boy-child Ryan Cabrera is consumed by teenage heartbreak. As the protagonist for nearly every song on his (better than it should be) major-label debut, Take It All Away, he pines for loves both past and present like a deer on the highway faced with the field, the median, or the truck. For the most part it's the latter that the young "heart-rocker" chooses to get into it with, but the singer/songwriter/guitarist and his golden-tipped man-child/producer -- Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls -- have concocted such a lively musical landscape for their "dear diary" lyrics that it's almost impossible not to smile amid the frank -- albeit clich?d -- emotional wreckage. From the opening "Mr. Blue Sky"-style piano rocker "Let's Take Our Time" to the falsetto-rich tenderness of "True," Cabrera proves himself to be more than just another pretty face with a lot of industry money behind him. He's got a great voice, a knack for incorporating Beatlesque key changes into otherwise mediocre melodies, and a healthy, irony-free take on angst that will earn him a raging sea of young women to wade through. Rzeznik fills each track with a combination of modern Pro Tools wizardry and good old-fashioned guitar playing -- ornate finger-picked acoustics appear randomly throughout -- and it's a testament to his industry tenacity that each one sounds like a potential hit. Take It All Away is as disposable as the pop genre itself, and Cabrera is the perfect proxy, but if he can ride out the fleeting fame and fortune that goes hand in hand with a big-money/radio-ready industry record, he might just have what it takes to build a career on his own terms. ~ James Christopher Monger
Though he first came to the attention of many fans as Ashlee Simpson's boyfriend, Ryan Cabrera slugged it out on the Texas club scene for several years before being discovered by Ashlee and sister Jessica's manager dad, Joe Simpson. This experience is evident in Cabrera's polished delivery, which combines the smooth, youthful timbre characteristic of boy-band singing with a lump-in-the-throat melancholy reminiscent of 1980s New Romantics Simon LeBon (Duran Duran) and Jim Kerr (Simple Minds).
TAKE IT ALL AWAY was co-produced by John Rzeznik, and often traffics in a lush brand of rock balladry similar to that of Rzeznik's band, the Goo Goo Dolls. "Let's Take Our Time" kicks off with a Paul McCartney-style pumping quarter-note rhythm, while "Blind Sight" recalls the soaring drama of Jeff Buckley. Elsewhere, the album mixes '80s-style orchestral pop with dance beats and a rough-and-ready rock rhythm section. An accomplished debut, TAKE IT ALL AWAY reveals an artist poised to transcend his teen-pop associations.

4 of 5 Unique enough but... Tuesday, June 21, 2005
Chris Eberlein from USA

Ryan Cabrera's debut Take It All Away proves an up-and-comer that definitely has some potential. Though his voice isn't always as unique and different as some other male artists today (which seems to be the trend these days as seen in rival Jesse McCartney), his light wispiness and frequent head voice melismas prove his reasons for being a star. Opening Jessica Simpson's successful Reality Tour 2004 certainly didn't hurt his popularity, or being frequently featured in on-and-off girlfriend Ashlee Simpson's TV show, nor the song material itself. Like McCartney, Cabrera co-wrote some songs and even co-produced the record himself showing his marketability and savviness. Though not as universally good-looking as co-pop star Jesse McCartney, one thing --musically-- Ryan has going in his favor is his more unique voice (though still bland). In the end, though, Take It All Away is a record you're not likely to want to once you hear it.
