 | Superman: Doomsday - DVD Review By: Brian Chen - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 11/29/2008 1:33 AM | |
Death. Superman. Those two words made The Death of Superman one of the most successful comic book series in the '90s. Surprisingly enough, the title of the animated-movie adaptation, Superman: Doomsday, contains neither of those words. But the bloody "S" symbol on the DVD cover should make things clear, even if you haven't read the comic. Yes, this is the movie in which the mysterious alien Doomsday beats the crap out of, stomps on, and "kills" the Man of Steel. Yes, you actually see blood. No, this isn't a movie for kids. Yes, comic book fans will appreciate this movie -- but they probably won't love it.
That's because Superman: Doomsday tries just a little too hard....read the full review |

5 of 5 BUY THIS DVD! :-) Sunday, February 10, 2008 A Viewer from Canton, OH
This movie is arguably better than the comic it is based on. Death of Superman was lagging in storyline...Superman:Doomsday is everything but. The makers of this movie did a good job separating this from the DCAU (where they worked on Superman: the Animated Series and Justice League) and made this movie completely independent. If there had been no comic, or Justice League, or S:TAS, this movie would still stand on its own. The characters are the ones we know and love--and this movie's Luthor is the most evil yet. They could have easily made the movie a carbon-copy of the comic, but what the creators have done is much greater. They've made correctly decided when to break away from comics continuity (such as Lois not yet knowing Superman's identity), and when to stick with it (such as adapting the bridge fight and final Doomsday/Superman blows into the movie). The side plots are as engaging as the main, if not more, and the music, while not normative for Superman, does its job better than any other score thus far. An overall good buy for $11. Superman doomsday is a great movie. Lots of fighting with superman. This may not be a movie for Kids and it did not follow the comic, but still a great show. Was this review helpful?
