Summit is a small label that has developed a reputation for uncovering talented veteran musicians who haven't had ample opportunities to record as leaders. One such player is trombonist Frank Darmiento, who's joined by a rhythm section including keyboardist Joel Rubin, bassist Steve Millhouse, and drummer Bob Wainwright. Darmiento, who penned six of the 11 tracks, is primarily responsible for the arrangements, though he recognizes some assistance from his bandmates.
He starts off "My Old Flame" with an unaccompanied excerpt of a cello suite by Johann Sebastian Bach, transcribed for trombone. His take of Henry Mancini's "The Days of Wine and Roses" is upbeat, punctuated with the trading of twos and fours with Wainwright. Another favorite of singers, "I Thought About You," is suitably mellow and swinging. "Bye Bye Blackbird" may not appeal to everyone, recast in a funky fusion setting with Rubin and Millhouse switching to electric instruments. The leader's originals also are worth hearing. He calls the snappy "Lost in Aisle Seven" a truncated blues, due to the abbreviated nature of the first two phrases. "Sudden Impact" has electric piano, but this hard blowing piece sounds like something that would have appealed to Gerry Mulligan during the early '70s when he made Age of Steam. "Lightening Strikes Twice" opens with an intimate piano solo before suddenly segueing into a hard blowing bossa nova setting. All in all, a very rewarding date. ~ Ken Dryden
