Notes & Personnel Info |  | As its title suggests, Times Square Records' collection The Streets of Bollywood...And Beyond only takes the music of India's movie industry as a jumping-off point. The collection is bookended with selections from the film Bluffmaster, beginning with "Say Na, Say Na" and concluding with "Naadirdinna." But the sequencing is not so much circular as it is regressive. Early on, the collection veers toward tracks, several of them remixed, that incorporate elements of rap and hip-hop, with English lyrics mixed in to create a more Western sound. The Bollywood singers are often employed much the same way R&B singers are in American hip-hop tracks, to provide melodic contrast to the rappers. The musical intermingling also includes Jamaican toasting, making for quite an international stew. But as the disc goes on, it tends to become more traditional, perhaps as a means of making the track from traditional qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, which appears next to last, fit in better. ~ William Ruhlmann |
