Unlike many hip-hop movies, the film purports to be about the real Jay-Z and how he keeps things on the street. While that matter is open to debate, it is true that the soundtrack is street-level hip-hop, both for better and for worse. Many of the artists on the collection are underground rappers -- Jay-Z and Noreaga are the best-known names here -- who all follow a similar style: hard-hitting beats and blunt (as well as blunted) freestyle raps. There are some really good moments here, enough to make it worthwhile for dedicated fans of the genre, but there's also enough repetition here to make it a little trying for casual listeners. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | The streets are not only watching, they're hot, as Jay Z dominates this soundtrack and teams up with plenty of Hip-Hop notables. "It's Alright" features Memphis Bleek, "Love" features Rell and "Celebration" brings together Sauce Money, Memphis Bleek and Wais. The other cuts on this album are from Hip-Hop and R&B groups who work without Jay-Z's participation. "Thugs R US" teams Noreaga and DJ Clue, while "Pimp This Love" is an R&B/deep-pocket soul track with Christion. The album is deep in urban texture, with contributions from M.O.P. ("My Nigga Hill Figga"), Murder, Inc. ("Murdergram") and Diamonds in Da Rough ("The Doe"). Packed with up and comers and sprinkled with veteran spice, STREETS IS WATCHING is worth a listen. |
