Although he's of an earlier generation, Wainwright's trademark sense of wry black humor and almost exhibitionist emotional honesty fit in perfectly with those of the emo generation. With guest spots by Richard Thompson and Van Dyke Parks, among others, STRANGE WEIRDOS combines a handful of instrumental themes with several brand-new and deeply affecting Wainwright originals, including "X Or Y" and "Final Frontier," which nods to his son Rufus Wainwright's cabaret obsessions. Not just another film soundtrack, STRANGE WEIRDOS is also a solid Loudon Wainwright III album. | Producer: Loudon Wainwright III; Joe Henry |

4 of 5 Quasi-soundtrack = great Wainwright solo album Sunday, August 12, 2007 redtunictroll from Earth, USA
Technically a quasi-soundtrack (that is, an album that includes music from the film "Knocked Up" and more), this disc really plays as Wainwright's latest album. Wainwright's developed an artistic relationship with writer/director Apatow that dates back to the latter's short-lived (and much missed) television series, "Undeclared." Additional on-screen roles for Wainwright were forthcoming in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up," but it was the latter that cemented the artists' musical connection. For his latest film, Apatow commissioned Wainright to write the soundtrack.
¶
In doing so, Wainwright contributes several new songs, reprises "Lullaby" from his 1973 "Attempted Mustache" LP, and covers Mose Allison's "I Feel So Good" and Peter Blegvad's "Daughter." In addition to Joe Henry, Wainwright's musical collaborators include Patrick Warren, David Piltch, Jay Bellerose, Greg Leisz, Van Dyke Parks and Richard Thompson. Their accompaniment is terrifically organic, surprising for an assembled band, and terrifically sympathetic to Wainright's lyrics.
¶
Wainwright himself is as wry as ever and brings his engaging stage charm to these studio recordings. He sounds peaceful as he unspools the slow-motion cinema of a "Valley Morning" and fatalistic in contemplating the gender ("X or Y") of a soon-to-be-born baby. The latter's gospel fire is the perfect touch for a song of parental faith. Other highlights include the mid-life accounting of "Doin' the Math," the intimate title track, and the lovely city homage "Grey in L.A." This is one of Wainwright's best in many years. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2007 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com] Was this review helpful?
