Hall was a key transitional figure between the straight-laced Nashville Sound of the 1960s and the iconoclastic Outlaw Country of the '70s. Hall's uniquely detailed, narrative lyrics were like short stories set to music. Some were character studies ("I Hope it Rains at My Funeral"), some were novelistic observations ("Ballad of Forty Dollars"), and some were well-spun tall tales ("A Week in a Country Jail"), with the best of them included here on this generous two-disc anthology. | | Hall's guy-next-door vocal delivery is a perfect, low-key vehicle for his sharply written story-songs, whether he's describing a killer's electrocution ("Turn it On, Turn it On, Turn it On") or an itinerant musician's strained relationship with his father ("Homecoming"). Besides the brilliant writing, the key that really turns the lock here is Hall's indefatigable sense of humor, adding sparkle to even the darkest tales. STORYTELLER, POET, PHILOSOPHER is the definitive collection of this one-of-a-kind artist's work. | | The double-disc box set Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher concentrates on Tom T. Hall's talents as a narrative songwriter, eschewing some of his better-known novelties for lesser-known, but better-written, serious songs. That doesn't mean the box is devoid of hits -- all of the important ones are here. What it does mean is that Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher is the first Tom T. Hall compilation to convey accurately the scope of his talents, as well as his achievements. ~ Thom Owens | Musical Guests | | Johnny Cash | | Patti Page | | Dave Dudley | | Bill Monroe |

| Artist Overview |
| Tom T. Hall was enormously successful on the country music scene of the '60s and '70s thanks to his unique songwriting style. He mated simple melodies to a narrative lyrical approach more akin to short story writers like O. Henry than to any other country artists. By the '80s his output and performance schedule slowed, but he remained active into the 21st century. |
