Without a doubt, The Doors are one of the most influential bands of all time. The remaining members of The Doors join a crop of today's artists on this collection. Artists include Creed, Aerosmith, Smash Mouth, Stone Temple Pilots, The Cult, Days of The New, and more. The Doors are America's seminal rock band. They were never part of any movement and during an era of very high fliers, their visionary path was posted well outside the rock norm. They were driven by a unique group-prophecy and a determination to push the envelope of poetry, spirituality, intellect and psychosexual exploration in popular music.

Essentially Elektra Records' tribute to a band that originally helped put them on the map, Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors was assembled by producer Ralph Sall, with a heavy concentration on mainstream-oriented alternative rock. While some tracks are the straight-up covers typical of tribute albums, die-hard Doors fans have greater reasons to pay attention. The surviving band members appear on several tracks -- sometimes as a backing unit, sometimes as individual guest collaborators -- with frequently vital-sounding results. Echoing the Fatboy Slim "Bird of Prey" single (coincidence that this was released around the same time?), producer Sall also incorporates sampled Morrison vocals, usually over atmospheric, electronic-tinged backing tracks; this tactic also produces beyond-the-grave Morrison duets with John Lee Hooker and William S. Burroughs. However -- perhaps logically -- it's the band performances that have the most life to them, especially those involving the Stone Temple Pilots and Ian Astbury. Even though Stoned Immaculate occasionally suffers from typical tribute-album unevenness, it's overall a fitting testament to the Doors' legacy. ~ Steve Huey
STONED IMMACULATE is much better than the average tribute album. Not only is it more cleverly conceived; along with the contemporary and classic bands performing in homage to the Doors, there are works by artists who influenced the seminal Morrison-led group.
There's nary a dud track here (although Cult frontman Ian Astbury's version of "Touch Me" at times verges on Wayne Newton territory) and at least one--Creed's "Riders on the Storm", which reinterprets the song's chorus brilliantly--actually improves on the original. Other highlights include Aerosmith's letter-perfect Xerox of "Love Me Two Times" (a song they were born to play), William S. Burrough's appropriately sepulchral recitation of "Is Everybody In?" and Stone Temple Pilots' nicely metallic take on "Break on Through."

Producer: Ralph Sall (Compilation)

Engineer: Eddie Miller
