| | | Features: DVD Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon), husband and father of a precocious young son, finds his blue-collar Chicago existence altered after he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party. What started as a diversion turns disturbing as a post-hypnotic suggestion releases a subconscious power Tom didn't know he had--clairvoyant visions of murder. As these visions start to come true, he comes into contact with several disturbed spirits. In order to let them rest in peace, he must bring their killers to justice, without compromising his own sanity. "...packs a spooky wallop..." Janet Maslin, The New York Times "...rivetingly haunting." Christine James, Box Office Magazine "...a canny piece of mature filmmaking..." Wesley Morris, San Francisco Examiner

And strap yourselves in for the spookiest, most imaginative hypnosis scene in movie memory. You are getting ...very...scared. - Richard Corliss ReelViews 7 of 10 Stir of Echoes belongs to one of the oldest genres of horror films: the ghost story... Like all good ghost stories, it understands that the intent is to build suspense through atmosphere and a strong narrative, not through a barrage of sudden shocks and copious gore. ...it's still the kind of film that may give you pause the next time you walk into a dark room by yourself. - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 6 of 10 Kevin Bacon stars in one of his best performances... [Bacon] is sometimes able to suggest characters who are being driven mad by themselves. Here he implodes in a role where that's the right choice; another actor might have reached too far. Kathryn Erbe is not merely worried, but also exasperated by her husband, which is the right realistic touch... - Roger Ebert

4 of 5 Stir of Echoes Monday, February 14, 2000 Chris T from Gaithersburg MD
This movie did have a hint of 6th sense, but not enought to say that it was a ride off. The picture looked great, but I was more impressed with the directional sound of this thriller.Whispering voices were coming from the left and right..scary!
I was pretty impressed with Bacons acting on the whole. Definately a movie to see on DVD! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Kevin Bacon is still alive! Monday, February 07, 2000 Tammy from Galt, Ca.
It was nice to see Kevin Bacon in something new. I think he did a great job in this one. The movie had good special effects and suspense to it. If you've seen 'The Sixth Sense' then you will like this one. It was better than I expected it to be. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Slightly flawed, but surprisingly good! Sunday, December 19, 1999 Josh from Dayton, OH
I was one of the few people who hated the Sixth Sense. When I saw this movie first, I reserved judgement until I saw both. After seeing the other, I decided that Stir Of Echoes was way better. There are a few flaws in the film, and part of the ending may not be very original, but for the most part this movie is suspenseful, well written, and very well acted. Was this review helpful?
