Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) is a bold free-spirit with no cares, no worries and absolutely no faith in God. All of that changes when she suddenly begins to suffer the Stigmata, living wounds of the crucified Christ. Bleeding from these miraculous wounds and speaking in an ancient Biblical tongue, Frankie comes to the attention of the Vatican's top investigator, Father Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne). But when a corrupt Church official, Cardinal Houssman (Jonathan Pryce), discovers that Frankie is actually channeling an extraordinary and earth-shattering message that could destroy the Church, he's convinced that she -- and the force possessing her -- must be silenced. Determined to stop this deadly conspiracy, Kiernan risks his life to save Frankie and the message that will rock not only the Roman Catholic Church but the destiny of mankind forever! Stunning performances and a cutting edge score by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins make Stigmata "a visual and visceral feast" (Entertainment Today)!

"Terrifying! An unsettling journey into the unknown that will haunt you."  Jeanne Wolf, "Jeanne Wolf's Hollywood

Editor's Note

When a young American woman begins exhibiting the characteristics of Stigmata (spontaneously bleeding from the wrists and forehead, speaking in Aramaic), a Vatican envoy is deployed to investigate whether the afflictions are demonic or divine. The dark, quick-cut cinematography of Jeffrey L. Kimball (JACOB'S LADDER) and a gothic soundscape assembled by Billy Corgan place the devil (of this film) in the details.

5 of 5 The Truth About Stigmata Monday, March 31, 2003
queenlain from Santa Rosa, CA.

I would like to start off by saying that I really enjoyed seeing this film. When it first came out to rent I didn't want to see it because it looked like it was going to be some what gross and disgusting. When I finally did see it though, it was completly different. There was still some violence in it but that was a needed effect. Also, I just love Gabriel Byrne! He did an awsome job in the film. The film was extrodinary in that in stead of dealing with the evil devil like in Exorsist, it dealt with a past priest who needed a messanger. I love the speacial effects and enjoyed the film from begining to end.

5 of 5 Not as bad as these folks say... Wednesday, March 15, 2000
W.A.Steinmetz from La Crosse, WI.
I wasn't sure what to think of this movie when it was released and ignored it until it was released on video. After renting it, I now wish I'd seen it on the big screen. I enjoyed it very much. Strong acting from both leads. The story line was very gripping and believable...even with supernatural / para normal situations. Overall, a very good film.

This was a very good movie with good extras on the DVD. The acting wasn't the best but nothing to complain about. The plot and story progression were great, I actually watched this movie 2 nights in a row with no boredom.

I' ve never been an especially religious person, but this movie/experience has made me think quite seriously about about the definition of religion, and how it varies by personal interpretation! Byrne and especially Arquette gave excellent performances i

5 of 5 Outstanding, yet controversial Sunday, March 12, 2000
A Viewer from Dubuque, IA
Hello, definetely an outstanding movie to watch, although a bit controversial. It provides a prospective on organized religion that the religiously zealous will probably not appreciate, as evident of the number of extreme negative reviews given to this movie.
