Everyone deserves a chance to follow their dreams, but some people only get one shot. Tyler Gage is a rebel from the wrong side of Baltimore''s tracks and the only thing that stands between him and an unfulfilled life are his dreams of one day making it out of there. Nora is a privileged ballet dancer attending Baltimore''s ultra-elite Maryland School of the Arts -- and the only thing standing in the way of her obviously brilliant future is finding a great dance partner for her senior showcase. When trouble with the law lands Tyler with a community service gig at Maryland School of the Arts, he arrives as an angry outsider, until his skills as a gifted street dancer draw Nora''s attention. Now, as sparks fly between them, both on and off stage, Tyler realizes he has just one performance to prove that he can step up to a life far larger than he ever imagined. Running time: 103 minutes.

Advertising materials tell us all we need to know about Step Up. She's a little bit Fame, and he's a little bit West Side Story. She's an ice queen, while he's a Vanilla Ice clone. We get it. The dreary teen drama "Step Up" appears to be cobbled together from bits and pieces of successful movies. Like "Fame," it features a high school for the performing arts populated by kinetic kids with big hopes and dreams. The halls are alive with the sound of music...Tatum and Dewan show some chemistry on the dance floor, but it dissipates during a romantic rendezvous on a pier. They're laughably stiff during Nora and Tyler's first big kiss, and a shot of the sun conveniently setting between their lips does nothing to make the moment magical. - Ruthe Stein
