The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. On the strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing secessionist movement. Jedi Knights Obi-Wan and Luminara Unduli, along with their Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, are sent to stabilize the situation.

Annotation:
This story in the Star Wars series is set between the events depicted in THE PHANTOM MENACE and ATTACK OF THE CLONES and follows the adventures of a pair of Jedis, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, as they attempt to complete a complex political negotiation on a small planet embroiled in a struggle that will have a tremendous effect on the growing conflict between the Republic and the separatist movement.

Author Bio
Alan Dean Foster
Though born in New York City, Alan Dean Foster was raised in Los Angeles. He attended UCLA, graduating in 1968 with a degree in political science and the next year with a master's degree in cinema. Also in 1968, he sold his first fictional work, a long H. P. Lovecraft-inspired story called "The Horror of the Beach." After he graduated, his love of the exotic led him to French Polynesia for a year, where he lived with a Tahitian family. He continued to write short stories until his first novel, THE TAR-AIYM KING, was published in 1974. He has continued to write numerous short works in a variety of styles--westerns, horror, and mystery, as well as science fiction and fantasy--and has become one of the most sought-after writers in the field of movie novelizations. One of his first novels of this type was 1976's STAR WARS, which Foster wrote under the name of the film's director, George Lucas. In 1978 he wrote the first--and some consider the best--of the Star Wars novels, SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE. Icerigger and Flinx, his two best-known series, are notable for both their standpoints on ecology, and their sly humor. In addition to writing, Foster has traveled extensively, studied karate with Chuck Norris, taught film and screenwriting at the college level, and even filmed footage--in a professional capacity--of Great White sharks off of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Chapter One

"Haja, sweet scent-what're you hiding under that big ol' robe?"

Luminara Unduli did not look up at the large, unshaven, rough-hewn, and unpleasantly fragrant man or his equally coarse and malodorous companions. She treated their knowing grins, the eager forward tilt of their bodies, and their leering eyes with equal indifference-though their collective body odor was some-what harder to ignore. Patiently, she raised the spoonful of hot stew to her lips, the lower of which was stained a permanent purplish black. A series of interlocking black diamonds tattooed her chin, while more intricate markings decorated the joints of her fingers. The olive color of her skin contrasted strikingly with the deep blue of her eyes.

These rose to regard the younger woman who was seated on the other side of the table. Barriss Offee's attention shifted between her teacher and the men crowding uncomfortably close around the two of them. Luminara smiled to herself. A
