EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE: Eighteen years later, Luke Skywalker, a young farmboy on Tatooine, is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of the evil Empire. Although Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in a lightsabre duel with Darth Vader, his former apprentice, Luke proves that the Force is with him by destroying the Empire’s dreaded Death Star.

EPISODE V THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: Three years later Imperial forces continue to pursue the Rebels. After the Rebellion’s defeat on the ice planet Hoth, Luke journeys to the planet Dagobah to train with Jedi Master Yoda, who has lived in hiding since the fall of the Republic. In an attempt to convert Luke to the dark side, Darth Vader lures young Skywalker into a trap in the Cloud City of Bespin. In the midst of a fierce lightsaber duel with the Sith Lord, Luke faces the startling revelation that the evil Vader is in fact his father, Anakin Skywalker.

EPISODE VI RETURN OF THE JEDI: In the epic conclusion of the saga, the Empire prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star while the Rebel fleet mounts a massive attack on the space station. Luke Skywalker confronts his father Darth Vader in a final climactic duel before the evil Emperor. In the last second, Vader makes a momentous choice: he destroys the Emperor and saves his son. The Empire is finally defeated, the Sith are destroyed, and Anakin Skywalker is thus redeemed. At long last, freedom is restored to the galaxy.

A bonus Disc 4 includes the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced on the Star Wars saga; and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films, and much more.

Editor's Note

One of the most exhilarating and influential trilogies in the history of motion pictures, George Lucas's sci-fi spectacular continues to capture the hearts and minds of individuals throughout the world. This release contains the STAR WARS trilogy (episodes IV-VI) in one glorious package.

First up is STAR WARS; George Lucas's stunning sci-fi masterpiece, and arguably one of the most inventive and entertaining films ever made. As the adventure begins, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), an impulsive but goodhearted young man who lives on the dusty planet of Tatooine with his aunt and uncle, longs for the exciting life of a Rebel soldier. The Rebels, led by the headstrong Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), are fighting against the evil Empire, which has set about destroying planets inhabited by innocent citizens with the Death Star, a fearsome planetlike craft commanded by Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) and the eternally frightful Darth Vader (David Prowse, with the voice of James Earl Jones). When Luke's aunt and uncle are murdered by the Empire's imperial stormtroopers and he mysteriously finds a distress message from Princess Leia in one of his androids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), he must set out to find Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mysterious old hermit with incredible powers. On his journey, Luke is aided by the roguish, sarcastic mercenary Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his towering furry sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) as they run into a host of perilous situations while trying to rescue the princess--and the entire galaxy.

Considered the most morally and emotionally complex of the original Star Wars trilogy, THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK continues creator George Lucas's epic saga where STAR WARS left off. The Rebel Forces--which include young adventurer Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), rogue pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and the beautiful but seemingly humorless Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher)--have been successful in destroying the Evil Empire's Death Star. However, the Empire's top commander, the terrifying Lord Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), is scanning the galaxy for the Rebels' secret location. After a visually stunning showdown on the ice planet Hoth, the Rebels are forced to flee, and Luke separates from Han and Leia. Masterful storytelling weaves multiple, archetypal plotlines that pit Vader against Han and Leia as he desperately attempts to capture Luke for political--and, secretly, personal--reasons. Luke, meanwhile, finds himself under the tutelage of the tiny but powerful old Jedi Master Yoda, who teaches him the ways of the Force and warns the impatient but talented student against the threat of the Dark Side. Greek tragedy meets a philosophical hero's journey in EMPIRE, a remarkable sci-fi epic in which the performances are as powerful as the spectacular special effects.

The third and final chapter in the wondrous STAR WARS saga is RETURN OF THE JEDI. Luke (Mark Hamill) must save Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from the clutches of the monstrous Jabba the Hut, and bring down the newly reconstructed--and even more powerful--Death Star. With Solo imprisoned, Luke accompanies his faithful droids R2D2 (Kenny Baker) and C3PO (Anthony Daniels) in a rescue bid, with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) also lending a hand. After they valiantly disentangle their friends from Jabba's clutches, Luke returns to his Jedi Knight training with Yoda. Meanwhile, the Rebel Troops amass in an attempt to see off the impending threat from Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones) and his new Death Star, with the operation being lead by Han Solo. But Luke must face Vader himself if he is to become a true Jedi Knight, and as he enters into a spirited battle with his light saber-wielding enemy, some surprising revelations await the young warrior.

5 of 5 If you loved the "improved" trilogy Thursday, January 27, 2005
M. Salsbury from Hilliard, OH
I guess I am in the middle camp between those who are disappointed that George Lucas modified Star Wars' effects a while back, and those who enjoyed the updated movies. I bought both sets of films when they came out on VHS, and here I am again buying the new release on DVD. Still, the quality of these discs is as good as any you'll find, both sound and picture are excellent. I think it might have been cool if they'd included the original and updated versions on the same disc(s), with a simple menu choice at the front where you'd select which version you wanted, but they didn't ask me. There is a decent amount of supplementary material with the set, enough for me to purchase it even though I already had the films on VHS.

5 of 5 You've got to be KIDDING! Wednesday, September 29, 2004
Squeecher from Brooklyn, NY
People are actually upset that these are the "Special Edition" versions?!?!? You people are out of your minds! Just press "Skip" on your remote for Jabba the Hut talking to Han and the Dance Routine in "Jedi" and enjoy the 3 best Science Fiction Epics ever made with probably the best sound and picture I've ever seen offered on DVD...still the best.

4 of 5 Best Trilogy of all time WRONG VERSION!! Tuesday, September 21, 2004
Mike from the state of confusion
I was born the year New Hope was released and i grew up on star wars. So naturally i was not pleased with the "additions" made to the movies. And this set includes those changes which are somewhat subtle for the most part but very noticable to the die hard star wars nut. I would rather the old theatrical versions be released instead of the CGI versions but i think that Lucas was trying to tie the 2 trilogies together. One trilogy was in late 70's early 80's special effects and the other todays special effects which he probably felt would not relate the two very well. Personally i dont care how they relate to one another. The best thing in my opinion with the DVD release is obviously video quality BUT the sound is awesome. If you have a home theater system with a sub crank it up. The big question..."Is it worth the money?" The answer is yes HOWEVER, if the theatrical versions are to be released on DVD at anytime in the future i am going to dump these fast and get the "old" ones. Thats my opinion......

5 of 5 It's Lucas' Star Wars Wednesday, September 15, 2004
Brett S. from Bozeman, Montana
Simply put - It is Star Wars, hands down the most famous trilogy ever filmed. Without it, we would not be where we are today in terms of special effects. For one second, forget the effects and the stupid debates - Star Wars gave us adventure, it lured us to lift our heads to the night skies and pretend we were Han Solo evading the cunning Boba Fett or Luke Skywalker trying to redeem his own father - it was a good time at the movies. A time to sit back in your chair, turn your brain off and be completely dazzled.

3 of 5 Give it away why don't you Friday, September 10, 2004
A Viewer from Massapequa Park, NY
I know most of us have seen these movies 1000 times, but what's the big idea of giving away the endings in the product description. There will always be someone watching for the first time. As to the Special Editions, I didn't mind the purely technical changes (removing the grey boxes around the ships, bigger explosions, etc.), but changing the plot points was just stupid. They ruined the Greedo scene.

5 of 5 Star Wars Is, And Will Always Be, The Greatest Tri Monday, September 06, 2004
Corey from Rapid City, South Dakota
Star Wars is easily ranked as one of the greatest movies of all time, so there should be no reason why everyone shouldn't have this DVD collection in their collection. Plus, the films have gathered one of the biggest fan bases ever. The acting is great and the plot is excellent. Cinematography is, without question, great. The trilogy is winner of a total of 10 Academy Awards, with 17 total nominations. Now, to me, that usually says that the films are top-notch. The films some of the greatest special effects shots to date. Now, i agree with most people when they say that George Lucas should release Star Wars on it's original format. I personally would have liked to see both formats for each film, but i respect Lucas and have no problems with the newer versions. Overall, I think the DVD's will be great and i encourage everyone to buy the original trilogy for their collection.

5 of 5 Star Wars a cinematic milestone Wednesday, July 21, 2004
A Viewer from Huntsville, Alabama
This collection is a must have for not only the sci-fi buff but for all collectors of classic movies. The plot is gripping and the acting superb in this milestone trilogy that set the standard for special effects for years after its glorious run in the theaters. I would highly recommend it for the young and young at heart.

1 of 5 Give us the ORIGINAL version Saturday, July 17, 2004
Ivan from New York, NY
When the Abyss came out on DVD it came with both the original theatrical version as well as the directors cut. The Star Wars trilogy is only the most awaited DVD release EVER. Why is it that we don't get the same choices that any decent release would have? Personally I don't like the Special Editions and there are many others like me who sure won't be buying this version. If you want Lucas to release the original sign the petition here: http://www.originaltrilogy.com/

I think these movies are really cool. I like the big furry guy - it's funny when he's playing chess and then he gets mad. I like the part where they are riding the jet skis in the forest. That's cool! Star Wars is really awesome.

1 of 5 Modified version of Star Wars Trilogy - too bad. Wednesday, June 02, 2004
Star Wars is Dead and Lucas killed it. from Confusion, AK
What happened to the ORIGINAL versions? Why isn't the art/cinema community outraged that Lucas is modifing two movies that he didn't even direct!?!?!? Maybe some day we'll get the directors' cuts on DVD - the same thing I've had on VHS tape for 15 years. Lucas just doesn't understand why his original 3 Star Wars films are so popular, does he... how sad. Sign up at originaltrilogy.com.

5 of 5 The ultimate DVD collector's set! Sunday, May 30, 2004
Doug M. from Aliso Viejo, CA
I must admit that I was totally blown away when I was given the opportunity to preview 10 minutes of footage from the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD! I had no idea that the films would look and sound as good as they do. In fact, these films have been cleaned up to appear sharper and more vivid than the Special Editions that were released in the late '90s. And the documentary footage on the fourth disc is priceless, not only for die-hard fans but also for those of us who appreciate the historical significance of this original trilogy. You'll see Peter Jackson talk about how influential Star Wars was to him, Kurt Russell and Cindy Williams auditioning for the parts of Han Solo and Princess Leia, studio executives and George Lucas talking about how closely the series almost never got made and much, much more! This DVD set is a must-have for every collection.
