EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE: Eighteen years later, Luke Skywalker, a young farmboy on Tatooine, is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet. I guess I am in the middle camp between those who are disappointed that George Lucas modified Star Wars' effects a while back, and those who enjoyed the updated movies. I bought both sets of films when they came out on VHS, and here I am again buying the new release on DVD. Still, the quality of these discs is as good as any you'll find, both sound and picture are excellent. I think it might have been cool if they'd included the original and updated versions on the same disc(s), with a simple menu choice at the front where you'd select which version you wanted, but they didn't ask me. There is a decent amount of supplementary material with the set, enough for me to purchase it even though I already had the films on VHS. Was this review helpful?

People are actually upset that these are the "Special Edition" versions?!?!? You people are out of your minds! Just press "Skip" on your remote for Jabba the Hut talking to Han and the Dance Routine in "Jedi" and enjoy the 3 best Science Fiction Epics ever made with probably the best sound and picture I've ever seen offered on DVD...still the best. I was born the year New Hope was released and i grew up on star wars. So naturally i was not pleased with the "additions" made to the movies. And this set includes those changes which are somewhat subtle for the most part but very noticable to the die hard star wars nut. I would rather the old theatrical versions be released instead of the CGI versions but i think that Lucas was trying to tie the 2 trilogies together. One trilogy was in late 70's early 80's special effects and the other todays special effects which he probably felt would not relate the two very well. Personally i dont care how they relate to one another. The best thing in my opinion with the DVD release is obviously video quality BUT the sound is awesome. If you have a home theater system with a sub crank it up. The big question..."Is it worth the money?" The answer is yes HOWEVER, if the theatrical versions are to be released on DVD at anytime in the future i am going to dump these fast and get the "old" ones. Thats my opinion...... Simply put - It is Star Wars, hands down the most famous trilogy ever filmed. Without it, we would not be where we are today in terms of special effects. For one second, forget the effects and the stupid debates - Star Wars gave us adventure, it lured us to lift our heads to the night skies and pretend we were Han Solo evading the cunning Boba Fett or Luke Skywalker trying to redeem his own father - it was a good time at the movies. A time to sit back in your chair, turn your brain off and be completely dazzled.

I know most of us have seen these movies 1000 times, but what's the big idea of giving away the endings in the product description. There will always be someone watching for the first time.
As to the Special Editions, I didn't mind the purely technical changes (removing the grey boxes around the ships, bigger explosions, etc.), but changing the plot points was just stupid. They ruined the Greedo scene. Was this review helpful?

Star Wars is easily ranked as one of the greatest movies of all time, so there should be no reason why everyone shouldn't have this DVD collection in their collection. Plus, the films have gathered one of the biggest fan bases ever. The acting is great and the plot is excellent. Cinematography is, without question, great. The trilogy is winner of a total of 10 Academy Awards, with 17 total nominations. Now, to me, that usually says that the films are top-notch. The films some of the greatest special effects shots to date. Now, i agree with most people when they say that George Lucas should release Star Wars on it's original format. I personally would have liked to see both formats for each film, but i respect Lucas and have no problems with the newer versions. Overall, I think the DVD's will be great and i encourage everyone to buy the original trilogy for their collection. Was this review helpful?

This collection is a must have for not only the sci-fi buff but for all collectors of classic movies. The plot is gripping and the acting superb in this milestone trilogy that set the standard for special effects for years after its glorious run in the theaters. When the Abyss came out on DVD it came with both the original theatrical version as well as the directors cut. The Star Wars trilogy is only the most awaited DVD release EVER. Why is it that we don't get the same choices that any decent release would have? Personally I don't like the Special Editions and there are many others like me who sure won't be buying this version. What happened to the ORIGINAL versions? Why isn't the art/cinema community outraged that Lucas is modifing two movies that he didn't even direct!?!?!? Maybe some day we'll get the directors' cuts on DVD - the same thing I've had on VHS tape for 15 years. I must admit that I was totally blown away when I was given the opportunity to preview 10 minutes of footage from the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD! I had no idea that the films would look and sound as good as they do. In fact, these films have been cleaned up to appear sharper and more vivid than the Special Editions that were released in the late '90s. And the documentary footage on the fourth disc is priceless, not only for die-hard fans but also for those of us who appreciate the historical significance of this original trilogy. You'll see Peter Jackson talk about how influential Star Wars was to him, Kurt Russell and Cindy Williams auditioning for the parts of Han Solo and Princess Leia, studio executives and George Lucas talking about how closely the series almost never got made and much, much more!
